60 Coy Machine Gun Corps Cambrai

Hi Folks,

Am trying to find the war diary for 60 Coy Machine Gun Corps during their engagement at Cambrai in November 1917 - to no avail.  My interest is via Pte Thomas Kennerley 108557 who was KIA 20/11/17.  All help gratefully received, as ever!

Ken, that's brilliant, thank you!  Had been looking without success on both sites.  How did you know that 60 MGC was attached to 60 Bde - was that the numerical convention?  Either way, am really grateful.  Fi

Yes, brigade MG companies carried the number of their infantry brigade. Confusingly, the index to the War Diaries in class WO95 does not quote the company number, so if you search on "Brigade Machine Gun Company" you get about 200 hits.

I use this site which is invaluable

https://www.arcre.com/wdsearch

However if you enter 60 Company Machine Gun Corps it returns 60 Battalion, in March 1918 the Companies were organised into Battalions and took the nomenclature of th Division, but yes as Ron has confirmed prior to that the Companies were organised and numbered to the Brigade.  Unfortunately later in the war a fourth Company was attached to each Division.

However with 60 Company it was relatively simple in that if you enter 60 Brigade in the search box you get half a dozen hits you can usually ignore ‘Headquarters’ and the named units which leaves two, the Brigade MGC is usually at the tail end so start at the bottom and ...good luck!

Details from 60 Coy War Diary (WO 95/2122) ends on the 28th February 1918. This is quite a detailed WD, with full names of officers and award winning ORs and casualties etc. The War Diary of the new 20th Bn, (WO 95/2108) only begins on the 15th March 1918

There is a bundle of papers concerning the 60th Coy at the IWM,[1] but they largely concern actions in 1917. There is however, a copy of Lt Gen Sir I Maxse’s (GOC XVIII Corps) report on the actions of 20 Div for the period  21st March – 1st April 1918.

There is a typescript history of the 20 Bn MGC tucked into the War Diary
