HolymoleyRE Posted 26 December , 2018 Share Posted 26 December , 2018 Dear GWF Pals, Struggling to find much on the 34th Fortress Company RE, originally based in the Channel Islands by all account, then moved to Queensferry in 1914? Carlingnose, North Queensferry was the home of 34th Works Company RE... I know there was a reorg of some of the Fortress Company under Army Troops. So are these two units one and the same? Ron Clifton Posted 26 December , 2018 Share Posted 26 December , 2018 Hello Andy It was the normal practice of the RE to have a single run of company numbers other than for signal units, so 34th Fortress Company and 34th Works Company are one and the same. In August 1914 there was only one company (29th) specifically designated as a Works Company, so perhaps 34th was given a fresh role later that year. As you probably know, Fortress Companies were renamed Army Troops Companies in August 1915. 29th Co remained at GHQ France throughut the War, as a Works Company. Ron Cheers Ron, for corroborating my thoughts, just seems to be very little recorded about them. Andy
Ron Clifton Posted 26 December , 2018 Share Posted 26 December , 2018 If it was employed wholly at home, that would explain the absence of any War Diary. However, if it was based at North Queensferry, it is fairly likely that it had a role within the Forth coast defences, maintaining gun emplacements and the related buildings - that would fit a "Works Company" designation. This might be an avenue worth exploring. But of course it might lead to a dead end! Ron
