Mangoman Posted 23 December , 2018 Posted 23 December , 2018 I am currently fresearching those men commemorated on our local village war memorial but am having some difficulty if reconciling the miltary service of John Thomas Webb. The Commonwealth War Grave Commission, 'Soldiers Died In The Great War' and the 'Register of Soldiers Effects' show that he served as Private 12949 with 2nd Btn. Gloucestershire Regt. Conversely the overwhelming evidence from the ''Forces War Records', Soldiers of Gloucestershire Museum' (the Regiment's own museum) his Medals Index Card and the Medals Rolls show John Webb as serving in the 9th. (Service) Btn. Gloucestershire Regiment. Forces War Records also show that he was attached to 78 Machine Gun Company while with the 9th Bn Glos Regt. As far as I can gather both the 2nd and 9th Battalions served kin Salonika, Macedonia fighting against the Bulgarians. Webb was to die in Bulgaria in December 1918 from influenza. My problem is that the 9th Glosters left for France in July 1918 so would he have been transferred to the 78 MGC for the duration of the War or transferred to 2nd Battalion who at the end of 1915 were transferred to XVI Corps of the British Salonika Army on the Macedonian Front?
sotonmate Posted 23 December , 2018 Posted 23 December , 2018 His Medal Roll entry only shows 9 Battalion. I thought that he may have joined the (26 Division) MGC with his MG Company when the Army made MG Battalions in April 1918 but there is no ref to that in the LLT or a War Diary for a 26 Battalion MGC on Discovery database.
Mangoman Posted 24 December , 2018 Author Posted 24 December , 2018 Thank you for your help sotonmate. It appears that the query I have on this man's service may remain unsolved.
