H.M.S. Norman - Information Sought

Henry Elijah Rowles was born 1872 at Saul, and died 1927 at Teignmouth.

He served in the Mercantile Marine and Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve.

Attached is a newspaper cutting taken from the Western Morning News dated 3rd October 1927.

It mentions H.M.S. Norman being torpedoed.

Does anyone have information on this incident?

He was skipper RNR of the hired trawler NORMAN II, taken up by the Admiralty on 28 April 1915. From NORMAN He was invalided out of the service on 1 November 1915, after just six months in command. NORMAN was never "torpedoed" - this sounds like a 'yarn'.

Two years later he was commissioned sub lieutenant RNVR in November 1917 and, again, invalided as physically unfit in June 1918 (diabetes). He did not serve as sea as an RNVR officer.

See records:-

Seaman RNR (pre-war) -  http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D8175308

Skipper RNR - http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D8548335

RNVR officer - http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D8646006 - there is mention of an "alleged injury" sustained in NORMAN.
