Brixmouse Posted 21 December , 2018 Posted 21 December , 2018 My GF embarked Devonport 05/09/16 and disembarked Alexandria 17/09/16. How would I go about trying to identify which ship he sailed on?
GraemeClarke Posted 21 December , 2018 Posted 21 December , 2018 Hi who did he serve with ?? Regards, Graeme
Brixmouse Posted 21 December , 2018 Author Posted 21 December , 2018 (edited) Hi Graeme 1/5th Royal Scots Fusiliers but I believe this was his first time overseas? http://www.greatwarforum.org/topic/268346-pte-james-steele-little-15th-rsf Edited 21 December , 2018 by Brixmouse
sotonmate Posted 21 December , 2018 Posted 21 December , 2018 There are ledgers at Kew,as yet undigitised, which file trooping movement vessels by date order, which will have a ship's manifest in general terms and listing units but without naming lower ranks. The ledger is here: http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C4400408 but needs reading in situ at Kew.
MKC Posted 22 December , 2018 Posted 22 December , 2018 Hi, You also need to keep in mind that the date of embarkation and disembarkation in his personnel file are not always the same day that the ship departed from the port, or arrived at the destination. So you may need to look at ships that sailed on that date and a day or two after his recorded embarkation date. Likewise, his disembarkation may be the same day or a day or two later than the ship's recorded date of arrival. Happy hunting! Mike
