The Great War (1914-1918) Forum

Hello everybody,

I wanted to know what people knew about this man. I'm trying to uncover as much about him as possible to write a commemorative piece about him and his service.

I know a bit about him, and the key role he played during Verdun, but I wanted to see if anybody new something deeper I may not. I know it's quite a tricky ask, but I was hoping someone might have records, maps, or indications of what did specifically, and how he contributed during the war.

Let me know if you have any questions, as I suppose I am being quite vague.

Thank you.

Does the forum have anything French-specific?

The Soldier section seems very British-American.

Not complaining, just wondering; Thank you.

There is a French speaking WW1 forum which might be able to help more. https://forum.pages14-18.com/index.php?sid=97ef57c5ca1284e6c9c15644f4ba57ae

Oh wow. Yet again, wasn't aware that existed. I'll definitely refer to there for my France related questions, but I do enjoy the atmosphere here.

Jools saving me again - Many thanks.

Yes, I saw. I have not yet created an account, but have been reading. He is undoubtedly the most illustrious on my list. Merci.

if you don't create an account, you can't ask questions, just like here

There are very good specialists there, but if you have no precise infos about soldiers (other post), it will be 'aiguille dans la botte de foin'

Haha, I will try. I hope my written French will be adequate after all these years in the States.

Have a try, I'll see what you write

by the way : prefer the 'normal' part of the forum,  the 'international' part has less readers - or try BOTH !

many of us understand English, so in English in the international part, & in French in the other one ; this : https://forum.pages14-18.com/viewforum.php?f=86   (Accueil du forum HISTOIRE DE LA GRANDE GUERRE COMBATTANTS DE LA GRANDE GUERRE Recherches)   would be more appropriate

Thank you so much. I do understand and speak French fluently though, so now worries there. I need approval from an admin, but then I'll be in. I'll keep you updated :)

Merci mille fois @mva

et : (in that post)dossiers de pension (which I mentionned earlier : Les Dossiers de pensions:
Sur le site du SHD (Service Historique de la Défense), un répertoire des dossiers de pension est consultable:

On regrettera cependant son manque de lisibilité.

The general Passaga is my great grand father , at this time I am reading the earliest copy , before being published of his book called : Verdun dans la tourmente .

his role during the 1914-18 war .

i am not a military person but do find this book fascinating . Some of his battle victory can be attributed  to his experience gained in Africa and Indochina . The casuality numbers are astonishing . I have other books from him and the livre d or to read , statements from General Perkins , Petain , Foch and Theodore Roosevelt ,

just fascinating and I am looking forward to read his other books

Just a small additional info.

At the end of ww1 general Passaga free the city of Forbach, in Lorraine close to the German border and Sarrebruck. To commemorate this event one street in Forbach was nominated and remains today "Rue du General Passaga".

As promissed, the two street plate "rue du Général Passaga" in Forbach. First in at the corner with place de la République  ( before 1918 Kaiser Wilhelm I platz) The statute of W I was removed in 1918, the Republic during the Nazi annexion to come back in 1946.

The General Passaga street was and remain rather "patrician", with the Sous-préfecture and sous-préfet residency, several ante 1918  mine director houses, a college and a private school ( la Providence).

In Alsace and  Lorraine , several streets' name change according to historical events...

You will find hereby 3 interesting links with Forbach history and General Passaga. I just make a mistake on my former mails. Passagas' street is an Avenue, not a single street.  Shame on me.

Several views of Forbach... and the entrance of General Passaga on 22 nov 1918 for the liberation of the town (old postcards).
