duncanross Posted 18 December , 2018 Share Posted 18 December , 2018 Is anybody aware of a person called Captain J. Driver who led salvage work on SS Leysian after she broke up off the coast of Abercastle in February 1917. I have no idea whether he was a captain in the navy or simply a skipper. I also have no idea to what the initial 'J' stands for in his name. Apparently their was a salvage depot at Pembroke docks so it is possible he was based here. HarryBrook Posted 18 December , 2018 Share Posted 18 December , 2018 There are various records on ancestry.co.uk relating to a John Driver, born about 1842 at Berkeley, Gloucestershire, died Goodwick, Pembrokeshire 1928. In the 1911 census his occupation was given as Inspector of Dredging for the Great Western Railway, address - Glendower Villa, Goodwick. . He also held a ship's Master certificate issued in 1881. Goodwick is in the Fishguard District. A possibility?
seaJane Posted 18 December , 2018 Share Posted 18 December , 2018 Not in the Navy List (inc. RNR, RNVR or retired) for January or April 1917. But Harry's man sounds like a good bet.
