Humphrey Posted 18 December , 2018 Posted 18 December , 2018 First, I'd like to thank all those that post, and reply to posts, on this site - I've learned a lot by browsing and 'lurking'. Second, if anyone has time/interest, then please take a look at the story of my grandfather Arthur Jack (Pat) Hutt, Sapper 30963 RE who enlisted in 1914 aged 16, served in France in the second half of 1915, and in 1916 found himself in Salonika. Like many of those there, he became ill with malaria, was hospitalised in Malta, returned to Salonika, and had recurring bouts of illness before being sent home via the 'Y' Scheme at the end of 1918. If anyone can shed any further light, recommend next steps, point out errors, etc - that'd be great. Hope it may be of use to someone else in their research too... Arthur's story is at http://ajhutt.wordpress.com
charlie962 Posted 18 December , 2018 Posted 18 December , 2018 Hello and welcome, Humphrey. I look forward to reading it. The first link you provided in the wordpress doc to 'a short pdf' in the header worked but clicking on the download at the foot just gave an error message. Are they the same doc ? Charle
Mark1959 Posted 18 December , 2018 Posted 18 December , 2018 Ancestry has an original Baptism record for him 10/4/1898. Father was a Plumber His medal card shows a qualifying date for his 1914-15 is 26/5/15. That will be either the day he left UK, the day he landed in France or both. Sapper on entry later T/2/Cpl.Medal Rolls add nothing further useful. His service records do not survive. My wish would be to see that official docs back up his version of events Next step I think would be to find more details on his units; e.g. war diaries should they exist So for instance this is the 17th Field Company Diary for their time in France during 1915 http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C7353453 This should provide context and detail. £3.50 to dowload

Charle Thanks Charlie. Yes, same document. My error on the links, which I'll sort out shortly.
Humphrey Posted 18 December , 2018 Author Posted 18 December , 2018 (edited) Thanks Mark1959. Useful info about the medal card. I've corroborated his diary by looking at the company diaries in France and in Salonika. His diary notes match the official documents very closely. Any tips on finding out more about medical records in casualty clearing, Maltese hospitals, etc? Edited 18 December , 2018 by Humphrey
Mark1959 Posted 18 December , 2018 Posted 18 December , 2018 Medical records are very limited generally and it is very hit and miss whether they exist anymore - generally they do not. FWR has transcribed some and FMP seem to be slowly putting up images of admission registers. Most seem to be Western Front based. Had a look in both FMP and FWR and cannot find any relevant records
