Alan24 Posted 16 December , 2018 Share Posted 16 December , 2018 (edited) The 21st KRRC sailed on this ship 5th May 1916 - from Southampton to Havre. Having trouble finding details on this ship and wondered if it was previously the paddle steamer SS La Marguerite. Maybe the LA was dropped when it became HMT Marguerite? As I understand, SS Princess Marguerite wasn't built until 1924 so can't be that. Regards Alan. Edited 16 December , 2018 by Alan24
Kath Posted 16 December , 2018 Share Posted 16 December , 2018 SS Marguerite is mentioned in this post as being a paddleship and transportiing troops from Southampton. Is this her? https://www.francisfrith.com/uk/beaumaris/beaumaris-the-pier-and-ss-marguerite-1911_63294
Admin DavidOwen Posted 16 December , 2018 Admin Share Posted 16 December , 2018 There are 1915 crew lists for both La Marguerite (reg number 102875) and Marguerite (reg number 105051) at TNA so presumably they were different vessels.
Kath Posted 16 December , 2018 Share Posted 16 December , 2018 (edited) "La Marguerite" was a steamer. Four stokers were killed when a boiler exploded. MKC Posted 16 December , 2018 Share Posted 16 December , 2018 (edited) Hi Alan The 1,554 ton PS La Marguerite was built in 1894. It was used for trooping between Southampton and French ports from March 1915 to May 1919. Operated by Liverpool & North Wales SS Company Ltd. The only SS Marguerite of any reasonable size (1,000 ton +) I can find are all French cargo ships not used for trooping, and not paddle wheelers. In the absence of any other information, I would suggest the references to trooping are to the La Marguerite. I'd also suggest the image of the "SS Marguerite" in the Frith image referenced in post 2 is actually the PS La Marguerite. The Marguerite referenced in post 3, ident number 105051, was a 250 ton tugboat that was supposedly lost in 1908, so I'm wondering how it had a crew list in 1915: must have got my wires crossed somewhere! David, that's a very interesting document there...don't suppose you have a page for 19 May 1916. My GGF landed at Havre 10am on that date and often wondered what ship he went over on. I'll have a look to see if it's downloadable from TNA anyway. Regards Alan
