The 3/9/1915 date you quote is the date he went to France not the day he joined the 5th Battalion WYR. His 1524 made me suspicious of the date you quoted.

The Medal Roll for his 1914/15 Star shows he was discharged to the Class Z Reserve on 25/3/1919. Class Z was a general liability to be called up again but was abandoned in 1920 and there was no further liability thereafter.

The British War and Victory Medal Roll adds nothing useful

Still searching.

Sorry for delay in getting back to this

Edit -

May be worth looking at the War Diary for the 1/5th. Not the most informative and very very unlikely to name him specifically. But will give you a bit of background. What we do not know is when he left them.

Available on Ancestry or downloadable from the National Archives for £3.50 from

http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C7354657

Sadly his service papers do not appear to have survived. I assume he did not re-enlist after the war.

Struggling to find his MSM in the London Gazette as did another contributor. If it was in that Gazette it was a Kings Birthday Honour. So probably not for a specific action more likely for general outstanding service.

I had never heard of airline section but this thread explains it very well. What we do not know is which corps signal company he was in

Motor airline companies were basically rigging telephone lines along lines of communications, where generally they could be fixed above ground. I'm not sure of the size, but each company would have several crews, each with its own motor transport. A friend's grandfather was in one such in Macedonia. Where they fitted in the command structure I don't know.

Hey Neil I can have a look up on ancestry as I have an account with them. What specific dates are we looking at?

I also have Wyralls history so will have a look in there.

Based on other surviving records for men of the 5th West Yorkshire Regiment numbered similarly to 1524 it would appear that your man enlisted at the end of January/beginning of February 1914.

1521 Attested 5th Feb. 1914 / Approved 5th Feb. 1914

1522 Attested 3rd Feb. 1914 / Approved 6th Feb. 1914

1523 Attested 6th Feb. 1914 / Approved 6th Feb. 1914

1525 Attested 29th Jan. 1914 / Approved ?? Feb. 1914

1526 Attested 29th Jan. 1914 / Approved 9th Feb. 1914

1529 Attested 12th Feb. 1914 / Approved 13th Feb. 1914
