Great War kilts

Recommended Posts

Trying to put together a repro Highland uniform to show the contrast with English regiments and want to get the details as correct as possible  There are plenty of modern military kilts available on the market, but can these be modified to accurately portray the Great War version?  If not, do any modern kilt manufacturers produce something close to the original?  I'm not too worried which regiment I portray, so if there is one that is easier to reproduce than the others, that's the one I'll go for.  Any info gratefully received.

You'll find old army kilts coming up from time to time on ebay. Can see none from the WW1 era at the moment, although there is one in Hunting Stewart tartan purportedly from 1947 and ex 7/9th Bn. Royal Scots.  This is the tartan that was worn by the 9th (Highlanders) Bn. Royal Scots in WW1.

I also recently saw a period khaki kilt cover for sale on ebay.  In fact with patience, you could probably find most stuff on ebay, if not, there are companies that specialise in making reproduction uniforms and accoutrements.

Is/was there much difference between a military kilt of WW1 and a military kilt of the 1940s/1950s? A large number of kilts were sold off in army surplus stores after the disbanding of many of the TA battalions in the 1960s. Surely there should be some of them somewhere still?

Silvermans used to hold a lot of stock but I think those days have gone. Presumably Government tartan (Black Watch) is the more commonly found military kilt.

You might compare this 9th RS kilt claiming to be first world war

kilt4

With this post war 7th/9th RS kilt

1939d

This one has been modified to be 'vintage'

(I claim zero knowledge on the subject!)

The Cameron Highlanders sett would be a good kilt to use for your reproduction.  It is clearly different to that of the Black Watch (so-called government tartan) that was used by so many regiments before their adoption of something specific to them.

Cameron’s kilts continued to be used for some orders of dress by both the Queen’s Own Highlanders (Seaforth and Cameron), and The Highlanders Regiment, who succeeded them relatively recently.  There are thus quite a few of their kilts still around.

The Cameron’s were a favoured regiment of Queen Victoria.
