Curious to know what, if any, service this man may have had during the Great War.

DESERTER AT AXMINSTER.

Committed a Theft to Get Out of the Army.

At Axminster Petty Sessions, on Tuesday, George Samuel Young was charged with stealing a pair of boots from a van at Shute on May 27th. Prisoner gave himself up at Axminster as a deserter from the 3rd Rifle Brigade, and was wearing the boots in question. He first said he bought them at Plymouth, but afterwards admitted that he took them in order to get out of the Army.

Prisoner, who pleaded guilty, handed in a written statement to the Bench, in which he gave as his reason for stealing the boots that he wanted to get out of the Army and support his wife, who was at Eastbourne, in a proper manner. He had been in the Service 18 months, and belonged to the 3rd Battalion Rifle Brigade. He served with the 3rd Battalion Royal Suffolk Regiment in the South African War, and had received a medal and five bars.

Supt. De Schmid said inquiries had been made, and nothing was known against Young. He had deserted twice before.

The Bench sent prisoner to gaol for one month, with hard labour.

Thanks, Craig. I'm assuming that deserting three times wouldn't debar him from being called up during the war.

Not as far as I'm aware.
