South African Infantry records

Hi all

I am trying to find information on an Ernest William PHELAN 3356 2nd South African Infantry

He died in 1916 and is on the CWGC

CWGC

Private PHELAN, ERNEST WILLIAM
Service Number 3356
Died 18/07/1916
Aged 41
2nd Regt. South African Infantry
Son of J. W. and Elizabeth Phelan.

But apart from a less detailed entry in the South African Roll of Honour I am struggling to find anything on him

Many men who served in the South African Infantry appear in the medal index cards but not this man

Where would service records be normally held,  at the NA or in South Africa

Any pointers would be gratefully received

South Africa

Sorry I cannot post links to earlier posts, but search forum for Dr John Burnham King  or South African Service Records and you should find a South African researcher email who might help

Thank you again

Despite being under the correct service number that didn't come up

Just shows how inadequate the Ancestry search engine is

Not finding a medal card or anything else I hadn't thought to check the register of soldiers effects

Thanks for pointing it out I will pass it on

Much appreciated
