Cavalryman24 Posted 1 December , 2018 Share Posted 1 December , 2018 (edited) Would anyone have details or a map of the trenches between Authuille and Thiepval in December 1915. I am trying to pin the exact location of the 17th Lancers during that time. I have a trench sketch from the 6th Cavalry who were on the 17ths right, sadly it's not very helpful, when compared to a modern map. I cannot seem to find any trench maps before April 1916 for this area, they may not exist. Edited 2 December , 2018 by Cavalryman24 typo
brianmorris547 Posted 2 December , 2018 Share Posted 2 December , 2018 The nearest I could find was in the WD of 4 Div HQ General Staff. A Monthly Report of Defences dated 27/12/1915 with a key to the trench names in William Redan (Ancestry p 725 and 726). There are maps on p 727 and 728 showing the British positions and p 737 and 738 showing the German positions. I had a look in the WDs of 10, 11 and 12 Infantry Brigades (4 div) but no success. If you can identify the Unit south of 4 Div you may find more. Brian
Cavalryman24 Posted 2 December , 2018 Author Share Posted 2 December , 2018 Many thanks, I have tried the WD of the Sialkot Brigade with no success, also the 7th Dragoon Guards the unit the 17th Lancers took over from. I will keep looking.
Howard Posted 2 December , 2018 Share Posted 2 December , 2018 I just looked at a list of 100+ maps, all apart from 2 are too late. The 2 in date only show part of the area and no British trenches, in 1915 these were only on secret editions. Sorry. Howard
Cavalryman24 Posted 2 December , 2018 Author Share Posted 2 December , 2018 Many thanks I thought that might be the case. Using the 1916 April map has given me a rough idea as to the 17th location, which is better than nothing. I will try an overlay and see what it looks like. Dated October 1916 but names the trenches on the east side of the Ancre between Authuille and Thiepval. On Ancestry in War Diaries search in the Browse box under Royal Engineers - 49 Div - Piece 2784 - pp 91 and 92/575.
