Paul Reed Posted 19 January , 2005 Share Posted 19 January , 2005 Only if a nominal roll of some sort survives, which sadly it does not for this battalion, or if it is mentioned on a soldier's service record, which it sometimes is in certain documents. steve140968 Posted 19 January , 2005 Author Share Posted 19 January , 2005 Thanks Paul , unfortunately my grandfathers service records did not survive ( unless they were mis-filed ) . I have looked through his records in WO 364 - un-burn't series , but don't recall seeing this information , is it worth another look Paul ? With more than one company in action on the day he was wounded would it be pretty much impossible to trace his 'exact' whereabouts on the day in question ? One thing i find rather sad is that any research seems so hit and miss as regards to whether records survive , and i fear so much of our history is gone forever . Do you think that we will be asking these same questions 90 years from now about the solders of today ? I suppose with the widespread use of the computer perhaps not . Regards , Steve . Paul Reed Posted 19 January , 2005 Share Posted 19 January , 2005 Are you saying you found something in WO364? If so, then you must have found his service record. I agree it might not be complete - many I have looked at in this class are not - but it must contain some information?
steve140968 Posted 20 January , 2005 Author Share Posted 20 January , 2005 Paul , what i found in WO364 was very limited . Most of the documents were damaged and very difficult to read , however one that was easy to read was his 'medical report on an invalid' . This gave much information such as date and place of wounding ( 24/4/1917 - Arras ) . This document along with the ones i could read didn't appear to mention plattoon or company for a more accurate whereabouts , but it may be worth another check . Are there any documents that i should be concentrating on that may hold this information ? Are the documents that i viewed in WO 364 made up from those that survived from the burn't series or are they completely different from those that would have been in WO363 had they survived ? Many thanks , Steve .
