Remembered Today:

SD prefix on RNR medal

I note with interest on another post that the prefix SD on an RNR medal denotes the Special Trawler Section. In what way, if any, did this section differ from the Trawler Section in general ?

The SPECIAL SECTION of the RNR was instituted in April 1915 to enrol men who, under the existing rules, would not have been qualified. RNVR men could volunteer from the Crystal Palace depot. Fishermen aged 18-55 might also join. The usual fitness rules were waived to accept any who were "reasonably fit", Sea Scouts were among those enrolled as signal and deck boys. Boys from industrial schools, normally rejected as being too close to the criminal classes, were taken on as deck and cook boys.
