SALONIKA HOSPITALS

Is there a list somewhere of doctors who served at Salonika? I have several I know were there, they were Aussies with the RAMC. All I can find on ancestry.com is their medal cards which dont say much. I have one buried at Sarigol. I'm not au fait with this site yet so if anyone is an expert on this theatre then would you mind emailing me on disability@optusnet.com.au which will make it easier for me please and I'll give you a list of the names I have. I know this sounds a lot and if its better for me to post their (many) names separately I can do that but wld prefer to do off -site. I'm out in the sticks so do most of my research online.

many thanks

Lina,

I'm not sure exactly what information you are looking for but I have some brief details of Major William Keverall McIntyre's military service. He was an Australian doctor who served in Salonika with the RAMC. Let me know if it is of use.

You may have to buy copies of service records from the UK National Archives for RAMC officers.

Once you have five posts up on this forum you can send personal messages to other members if you don't want to leave your e-mail address on this thread.

Hi,

My name is Sarah and I work for a Belgian television company. We are currently working on a program about the Great War.

Therefore we are looking for diaries/written testimonies/letters from soldiers who where severly wounded, doctors, surgeons or anyone in the medical field during the war at the front in Macedonia and Albania.

We are interested in everything but especially in people that have a remarkable story. It is even better if those written testimonies are accompanied by photographs.

Would anyone here be able to help us accessing these documents?

Thank you!

Sarah Cordie

Hi SB and others,

This is my first post. My grandmother was Nurse Agnes O'Neill and she served in Cairo and Salonika - at the 42nd, 43rd and 52nd General Hospitals. She did not nurse at GH 50. Another Nurse A O'Neill from Australia is often confused with my grandmother - in fact my family received her service record by mistake and the most recent book (just published 2014), "Beechworth at War" by Richard Patterson has also confused both records.

Can anyone tell me whether GH 43 was a convalescent hospital as my grandmother was there but I think as a patient? I have a collection of postcards from Allessandria, Salonika and Macedonia that Agnes collected as well as quite a few photographs of Salonika. One of her closest friends was a Jane Priestley who also trained in Beechworth, Victoria, Australia and they enlisted at the same time.

Any information about these hospitals would be greatly appreciated,

Andrea Daly

Hi Andrea,

I'm an Australian AANS historian so it's always lovely to make contact with the families of 'my girls'!

The other A O'Neil for your information was Annie O'Neil (one l) who was called Nance - she was from NSW and trained at St Vincent's Sydney. She was never in Salonika so not sure why anyone would get confused.

The lovely Agnes Ellen served at No. 17 British General Hospital in Alexandria before going to Salonika. I believe No. 43 BGH was not a convalescent hospital but it had a 'sick sisters' ward' - so any nurse in the area went there for treatment.

Anne Hanson has a website on nurses from Beechworth

https://sites.google.com/site/ww1nursestrainedodhbeechworth/

and there is a photo of the lovely Agnes there.

Jan Bassett has quite a bit about Salonika in her book 'Guns and Brooches' which you should be able to find quite easily.

cheers

Kirsty

Hôpital d'évacuation n° 3 was there from August 1917 through to at least March 1919, with its 1er Section at Itea and its 2e Section at Bralo.
I'm afraid I haven't discovered where exactly they were located.
Some records suggest that Ambulance 1/57 was also at Itea in May/June 1919, and that HOE 3 might even have remained there until September '19.
The French dead from the hospitals at Itea and Bralo (I don't have the exact figure, but probably over 100) were transferred to Zeitenlik in the 1920s/30s.

Hope this helps!

Hello,

Reading through the content and wealth of information on here is truly inspiring. I realised before that someone wanted to get in touch from a TV company, like myself.

I am very interested in hearing more about Jessie Ritchie and her story. Would it be possible do so over private message, where I will of course be able to explain more?

Best wishes,

Daniel

Hi Daniel welcome to the forum.

a couple of things; you need to make a few posts (not sure how many it's 2) before you can send a PM and you may find some of the contributors to this topic are no longer active.

@Kate Wills

Is still active and knowledgable in this area.
