Marks13 Posted 17 November , 2018 Share Posted 17 November , 2018 Today I’m posting in remembrance of my x2 Great Grandfather Walter Town. He was killed 103 years ago today by shell fire near Ypres. He was in the 5th Labour Battalion D company. At the time according to the battalions war diary he was working on clearing roads near Dickenbusch. Walter lied about his age as he was over 50 , he managed to convince the recruiters he was in his 40s after several failed attempts of joining up. After only a week of training in Southampton the 5th Labour Batt deployed to France then through to Belgium. 2 of his sons served and fortunately survived the war. He is buried at the Divisional Cemetery which is west of Ypres along with 278 others, I’ve not had the opportunity to visit however all been well I will visit and pay my respects soon. Not to be forgotten by my family, lest we forget.
