PRC Posted 15 November , 2018 Share Posted 15 November , 2018 (edited) Hi, Could 22948 Private G R S Machin have been 22968 George E J Machin? Card held at the National Archive under reference WO 372/13/74205 Looking at the card itself the initial “J” could just as easily be an “S”. He qualified for the Victory Medal and British War Medal. No other information apart from Roll Numbers on the card. Also a possible candidate for 10422 Private H.E. Thurlepy is L/10622 H.E Thurley. National Archive reference WO 372/20/25329 He first landed in France on the 30th December 1915. I’m using the preview pane on the National Archive so looks like the remarks section has the note “D 1.2.17” but its obscured by the watermark. Private H. Thurley made it back to the UK but did indeed die on the 1st February 1917 and is buried in his home village of Upchurch, Kent. https://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/3057185/thurley,-/ Soldiers Died in the Great War has him as Henry Edward Thurley, who died of wounds. Bardess Posted 16 November , 2018 Author Share Posted 16 November , 2018 Thanks for your suggestions Peter and Charlie. I won't be changing the table as doing so alters the spacing and it gets a little messy. At least the names and corrected details will be picked up on a search. I am attaching the original with underlined queries including the Ptorrhoea
brianmorris547 Posted 16 November , 2018 Share Posted 16 November , 2018 Di I am in the process of checking the RE wounded in the Times OCL 11/10/1916 and the County Palatine RE service numbers for any hits on MH 106. One of the names on 11/10/1916 19331 Coggles S took me to MH 106/2064 which is 31 Ambulance Train 03/09 to 08/09/1916. I browsed through it and found ten RE Special Brigade men the details of which I passed to Terry. A great source. Brian

PRC Posted 16 November , 2018 Share Posted 16 November , 2018 Entry 88 is more likely "Gardner" or at a push "Gardiner" rather than "Gardener". Still no clear match on the Medal Index Cards although there are lots of Gardner's who served overseas with the Northamptonshire Regiment. Howevere nearest thing to a match on the MiC's was a 40030 George Gardner. Regards, Peter

PRC Posted 17 November , 2018 Share Posted 17 November , 2018 Driver 92245 A E Ford, Royal Engineers is probably Driver 9224 Albert E Ford, Royal Engineers. Also served Army Service Corps (SS 294), Army Pay Corps (2384?) and Royal Engineers (34374?) – at least according to the National Archive catalogue, where the card is held under reference WO 372/7/107141. However checking out the card itself his Royal Engineers Service Numbers are shown as 92245 and 373741. He qualified for the Victory Medal and British War Medal only. Medals issued by the Royal Engineers. The other three currently elude me. I was particularly surprised to find that that the National Archive has only five MiC’s for the surname Sturridge, and two of them are for the same VAD. That leaves two officers, with no other ranks details, and a British Red Cross Worker. Cheers, Peter

PRC Posted 19 November , 2018 Share Posted 19 November , 2018 Apologies for not coming back earlier - yesterday I tried checking the Official Casualty Lists printed in The Times to see if I could identify the lists on which these men were shown. My faint hope was that if I could spot the names that have been positively identified on one of the lists then that might help with the queries - if they have been corrected. However despite searching till the end of May 1917 I drew a complete blank even for names shown with GSW's. So going back to the good old National Archive - simply because it's search engine is a lot more amenable to wild card searches - Page 4 Private 32809 T. MacCourt 2 N&D. There is a Medal Index card held at the National Archive for a Private 32809 Thomas McCourt, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment. Reference is WO 372/12/200643. He qualified for the Victory Medal and the British War Medal. Other than the roll number there is no additional information on the card. Page 5 Private T4/85281 V J Taylor, ASC – the National Archive has a MiC for a Private Vincent J Taylor, Army Service Corps and Labour Corps under reference WO 372/19/180639 His service number with both units is shown in the catalogue as incomplete. Looking at the card it shows he was 85281 ASC and 269147 Labour Corps. First landed in France on the 26th July 1915 so qualified for the 1915 Star. Medals were issued by the Labour Corps. Remarks section has “Cl. Z 10-2-19” Hope that helps, Peter

PRC Posted 19 November , 2018 Share Posted 19 November , 2018 (edited) No worries :-) You had me hooked when I saw 9th Norfolk men in the All Activity Summary when you first posted! BTW Page 4 entry Private 30016 O Hale, 9th Norfolks was Osborne Hall Hale (edited 21/11 to correct) who would die serving with the 7th Battalion on the 14th October 1917. He has no known grave and is remembered on the Arras Memorial. https://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/637611/hale,-osborne/ I agree second word looks like Cancellous but “cancerous” would seem more appropriate. It would be more likely to see him receive the kind of long term treatment, (months), that would see him taken off the establishment of the 9th Battalion and subsequently posted to the 7th. Cheers, Peter Edited 21 November , 2018 by PRC 21/11/2018 Senior moment
Bardess Posted 19 November , 2018 Author Share Posted 19 November , 2018 Brilliant. Happy it's assisting your research! Actually it is Cancellous and, if his surname should be Hall, perhaps drop an email to CWGC as they have him as Hale too https://medical-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/cancellous+osteoma Cheers Di
seaJane Posted 19 November , 2018 Share Posted 19 November , 2018 Couple of medical expansions, hope you don't mind: Boils epid[ermal] = on the skin as opposed to in the mouth etc. Varix = a varicose vein Ing[uinal] hernia = hernia in the groin OM, otitis media = inflammation of the middle ear, glue ear epididymitis = inflammation of the scrotum, ouch.
