sleeper Posted 15 November , 2018 Share Posted 15 November , 2018 (edited) Picture was taken from another thread but possibly shows my relative having been killed at Cambrai. just like to ask what would the Germans have done with the remains of British soldiers. Buried in Situ or removed to be buried in a mass grave? This was one of 5-6 tanks cut off. Edward has no known Grave. laughton Posted 6 December , 2018 Share Posted 6 December , 2018 F Battalion Tanks at Cambrai 27 November 1917: https://sites.google.com/site/landships/home/narratives/1917/cambrainarratives/16-and-17-companies-27-november-1917 So they were north of Bourlon Wood. I just noticed you knew it was tank F27, I thought it was a photo of F13 and F4. It more or less matches the photo on the site here. If they were buried in situ by the Germans then you are looking for Tank Corps unknowns that were recovered from 57c.E.11.d or 12.c. Sailly [Cambrai] Intelligence Target Map 25-9-18 That would place F27 at about 57c.F.12.c.1.8. There are some top-notch tank people in the GWF, hope they see your post! laughton Posted 17 December , 2018 Share Posted 17 December , 2018 This map shows F27: https://sites.google.com/site/landships/home/narratives/1917/cambrainarratives/16-and-17-companies-27-november-1917/27-november-1917---map taken from this site: 27 November 1917 - Map: https://sites.google.com/site/landships/home/narratives/1917/cambrainarratives/16-and-17-companies-27-november-1917 All I was saying is that if the Germans buried them "where they fell" then that would be their general area on a COG-BR if you found one with Tank Corps men that were recovered. What I do if I have information like that is to look for cemeteries where men were concentrated from that time and/or area, then I check the COG-BR documents for that/those cemeteries and see if there are men that were recovered. Or am I missing the question?
sleeper Posted 17 December , 2018 Author Share Posted 17 December , 2018 No that’s all I was after Thanks Richard. With so many digs going on and knowing the location of F27, this could be a good location for repatriation of the three dead crew, being a relatively open field etc. A long shot I know but I live in hope. Many thanks Stu
