Remembered Today:

Western Front walk/way

Something on BBC news an hour ago about a scheme to make a walking route from the Swiss border to the Channel, on the line of the Western Front.

Nothing seen on GWF, but have any pals heard about it?

Saw the same thing this morning. The concept is based on letters from an officer killed on the WF, and being brought forward by his descendants, including one of the Countryfile presenters. Seemingly they have permission form a number of land owners, and I thought I heard that that amounted to something over 100 miles, but I might have been wrong. I seem to recall that there was a rather more grandiose scheme for a similar 'Pilgrims Way' put forward in the '20s, but that came to nothing.

This has been discussed for ages, particularly on social media. It was mentioned on the GWF a couple of years ago when it was called the Via Sacra. Here's its webpage - Western Front Way - and Facebook It seems their main requirement is money.

In 2017 I was asked for some ideas on walking the front in the Vosges. Croonaert and I both shared some suggestions with their representative but we were not acknowledged.

A friend pointed out the plaques to me this week... I'm feeling a challenge coming up ... to do it all I'd need a few weeks off, meaning I'll probably have to wait until I'm retired. But I could do a part... Nieuwpoort to Thiepval is practically entirely plaqued... would be about 160km... that's a 4 day march in normal times (like Nijmegen), a week nice walk (and a loooooot of pics) in these troubled times...

Tempting... VERY TEMPTING....

Roughly 23km per day? I think I could manage that with a bit of training and as long as you promise a) that I don't have to pull the trailer with the rocket launcher in it and b) not to shoot me if I fall behind. It would be something to look forward to when the times are no longer troubled (the walk rather than the being shot bit).

It's now possible to sponsor the  - in my view attractive - waymarks for The Western Front Way: one for a fiver, five for a score!

Seems like a good challenge to cycle it. My legs are a bit too past it to walk it. Sent my little contribution for some way markers
