Guest Posted 5 November , 2018 Share Posted 5 November , 2018 Hello I am new to this site and may not be laying this out in the correct manner. However here goes My wife's great uncle, 57th siege battery RGA died of wounds 7/4/17, buried at Sainte Catherines Arras. Bernard Edgar Spendelow 81348. Please has anyone any info on where the battery was around this time and what they were up to. I know the battle of Arras started on the 9/4/17. Thanks in advance
ororkep Posted 5 November , 2018 Share Posted 5 November , 2018 Potter2Gunner The 7th was ‘Q’ day of the preliminary bombardment to the battle and the Bty was positioned at St Catherine’s. 2 ORs were killed that day and another five wounded, with one of the Bty’s four 8in Howitzers knocked out. War diary survives and can be downloaded off the NA website for a small sum. Ref: WO95/480/3. There is a more specific account of what happened that day in the higher formation diary 57 came under at the time, which was 49 HAG (Heavy Arty Group).
