MKC Posted 3 November , 2018 Share Posted 3 November , 2018 Hello All, I have a listing of three nursing staff who were assigned to an Australian transport in Cape Town, South Africa for the voyage to England in 1916, to supplement the medical staff already aboard. The names are: A E Toosemore E Brodie M Flannagan None are in my AIF/AANS list, so I suspect they may be either British or South African. Does anyone have any information about these three ladies, please, especially their nationality? Thanks Mike
alf mcm Posted 3 November , 2018 Share Posted 3 November , 2018 Mike, M. Flannagan may be May Charlotte Flanagan, South African Military Nursing Services, died 29/02/1920. https://livesofthefirstworldwar.org/lifestory/7668978 Regards, Alf McM

Admin DavidOwen Posted 3 November , 2018 Admin Share Posted 3 November , 2018 There is an Elizabeth Brodie in the British Army Nurses records. Struggling to view on the tablet http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C10793670 Nothing for Toosemore or Flannagan in the British Army Nurses records at TNA. seaJane Posted 3 November , 2018 Share Posted 3 November , 2018 The nearest I can get to Toosemore is a Mary Ann Loosemore with the AANS 1917-1919; the Australian newspapers index at Trove pick up a Sister Loosemore who may be her or may be another nurse named Hannah https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/result?q="Sister+Loosemore". MKC Posted 3 November , 2018 Author Share Posted 3 November , 2018 (edited) Thank you David and seaJane, for your replies. David, Elizabeth Brodie is a possibility, and I'll purchase a copy of her file to find out. Jane, good suggestion but Staff Nurse Mary Ann Loosemoore didn't depart for England until May 1917, so much later than the ship I'm tracking, which was Beltana a year earlier. No indication in her file that Mary Ann had been overseas prior to May 1917, so I suspect not the lady I'm after. Thanks for the responses. seaJane Posted 3 November , 2018 Share Posted 3 November , 2018 I have searched familysearch.org (formerly the IGI index) and have found one solitary Toosemore, William, living in Devon in 1861. Otherwise all I can find is an Ada E Loosemoore, born Membury, Devon, 1889, and she doesn't turn up in the Royal College of Nursing archives. She may have emigrated, of course ... MaureenE Posted 4 November , 2018 Share Posted 4 November , 2018 Perhaps you could try contacting The South African Military History Society/ Die Suid-Afrikaanse Krygshistoriese Vereniging. http://samilitaryhistory.org Cheers Maureen
MKC Posted 5 November , 2018 Author Share Posted 5 November , 2018 Thank you, both, for your efforts and suggestions. I'll follow them up. I have found a couple with the family name of Toosemore, but they are few and far between, and none with 'AE' initials as yet. Mike
