Sommevr6 Posted 2 November , 2018 Posted 2 November , 2018 Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum so apologies if this is not in the correct section. I'm currently researching my family tree and need some help in trying to obtain more information about my great grandfathers military service. I have a War medal belonging to one of my relatives which bears the inscription T4-056114 Dvr M Mason A.S.C. This is Mathias Mason and i have managed to establish that he was a driver in the Army Service Corps and his medal index card shows he was entitled to the War Medal and the Victory Medal. I am trying to gain more info in relation to where he served and if possible with which Division or corps/Army. I am also looking to do the same with another great grandfather Jesse Winward HERBERT who was sapper 58785 in the Royal Engineers and was entitled to the 1915 Star, War Medal and Victory Medal. I believe he was a farrier/blacksmith by trade and went to France 31/05/15. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
chaz Posted 2 November , 2018 Posted 2 November , 2018 the T of T4 means he was a horse transport driver. problem with the ASC was/is that they were always on the move supplying one or another regiment. the museum may have further information, now the www.royallogisticcorps.co.uk/heritage/museum/ as for Jesse Herbert he was probably put in the Royal Engineers due to his skills, likewise, the Engineers were everywhere so maybe hard to tie either of them down to actual places.
Mark1959 Posted 3 November , 2018 Posted 3 November , 2018 Do you have any personal detail of either: likely year of birth, parents, siblings, place of birth, residence, etc. All these may help track the men down

Sommevr6 Posted 5 November , 2018 Author Posted 5 November , 2018 Chaz, the Matthias Mason, drayman from Whittle le woods is the correct one although on his medal card I think Matthias is spelt with just the one “t”. I have previously made enquiries with both the Engineers museum and the Logistics Corps museum about both my great grandfathers but these drew blanks other than to confirm that the T4 indicated horse transport.
chaz Posted 6 November , 2018 Posted 6 November , 2018 As we would expect, line regiments kept war diaries, the service regiments inc labour, ASC and some engineers were out and about so hard to account for. This is why many medal Collectors pass on them, no history or traceability. you do find variations in name spelling, also when checking ancestry watch for guessed towns, villages and names. Came across Burnbey today should be Burnley, down to handwriting..
