petet Posted 30 October , 2018 Share Posted 30 October , 2018 (edited) Can anyone identify the Lt McGregor / Lt Thompson involved in the forced landing at Beaudignies (X3a.6.6) when their controls were shot away. There were a number of McGregor's serving with No 35 Squadron, but I can't find any that were serving at that time and I am wondering if Thompson was in fact Thomson Any help / pointers would be much appreciated Regards Pete Edited 30 October , 2018 by petet
josquin Posted 31 October , 2018 Share Posted 31 October , 2018 (edited) The 35 Squadron aircrew were Lieut. Allan McGregor and Second-Lieut. George Irvine Thomson. McGregor was born on 23 December 1898, at Cawdor, Nairnshire, Scotland. Joining the R.F.C. on 27 May 1917, he was appointed a Temporary 2nd Lieutenant on Probation, on 2 August 1917, a Flying Officer on 18 October 1917, embarked to France on 23 January 1918, and was posted to 35 Squadron on 24 January 1918. Wounded during a combat mission on 1 July 1918, he returned to the squadron on 28 July. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross on 22 June 1918. Emigrating to the United States after the war, McGregor died on 19 November 1987, at Bangor, Maine, U.S.A. Thomson was born on 14 December 1899, at Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, where he was living at the time of the 1911 Census. He served with the King's Own Scottish Borderers Regiment prior to joining the R.F.C. in 1918. He embarked to France and was posted to 10 Squadron on 18 August 1918, then posted to 35 Squadron on 2 September 1918, and was on Home Establishment 15 February 1919. Awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Thomson lived in the U.K. after the war and died at Doncaster, Yorkshire, in 1971. The award citation for his D.F.C. states that he brought down 9 enemy aircraft. You were correct that the casualty report listing stated Thomson's surname incorrectly as "Thompson." I hope this was helpful. Regards, Josquin Edited 31 October , 2018 by josquin
