London irish Middlesex regiment boer war????

Can you tell me the era of this photo and if possible is this the Middlesex Regiment (London Irish). Was it boer war or after boer war

The uniform suggests the period before 1908, but it’s a Colour Sergeant of the London Irish, at that period the 28th Middlesex Volunteer Rifles.  He seems to possess the Volunteer Service Medal.  Above his rank badge is a volunteer sergeant’s proficiency star.
