North Berwick High School Roll of Honour

Posted (edited)

Hi

This is a potentially big ask for the members of this forum, but Im hoping that, as I have found over the last 5 years, some knowledgeable people will be able to help me out.

As an Armistice project at the School, I would like to get the pupils involved in researching the School's Roll of Honour.  Its taken a little searching, but the Memorial appears to have been located in the North Berwick Community Centre.  Below is a list of names on the Roll and I would love to be able to find some more detail for each name, that would allow our pupils to undertake some further research themselves.  I am aware of a similar project that was undertaken by a former pupil a few years ago and it would be great to build on the work that was started.

Hi Alistair,

Please don't take it the wrong way, but have you tried to do any research yourself?

OK.

A couple of really easy ones for starters....

166540 Blair has service papers on FMP (link). They will also be on Ancestry, The unit war diary is at the National Archives (link) and on Ancestry (link)

503357 Arundell - the direct link to his papers is link. NB use the download pdf option to get the full record, rather than just the two pages on preview. The war diary is hit #49 here

James Mattison has downloadable service papers in the Australian archives, albeit under the number of 5415. I can't post a direct link, as the 'session' will be timed out. The search is linked from here though. You should be able to access the war diary via here

James Straiton Addison

https://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/36433/addison,-james-straiton/

Medal card shows man was in Scottish Rifles before HLI - CWGC says Royal Scots

His Effects record indicates he died in 1/1 South Midlands Division CCS and that fits in with where he is buried. So looks like he Died of Wounds rather than KIA.

Born Leith

1901 Census - Dirleton

SDGW - resided Gallance, Haddingtonshire

Alistair,

You know of course that information on those from the 9th Royal Scots can be found https://neillgilhooley.com/9th-royal-scots/index/ (I shall be updating this in the next week)

I guess you have also seen the book of remembrance?

I realised that there's a fair cross over between the two projects Neill.  So will most definitely be looking into your work once I can get started.

Ken - an alternative, what do you think?

https://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/137182/morrison,-/

The SDGW says birthplace Haddington, enlisted Edinburgh, Widow Katherine lived in Edinburgh

Died of Wounds 22/9/1917. 12 Royal Scots

Trying to prove if he is the John Morrison (twin brother of Cornelius or Neil) born Haddington c1890. Parents William and Flora. In 1891 in Haddington. In 1901 at 21 Forth St, North Berwick.

Not got current access to Scottish People site so very difficult to prove. Anyone with access can you have a look and see if you can find a marriage.

edit

A Scottish People search for correct names returned a marriage between John Morrison and Katherine Jane Spence, St Giles Registration District in 1915. Think St Giles is in Edinburgh but cannot trace her at the moment.

Widow's address is in Duff St Edinburgh on CWGC that is about 2 miles from St Giles cathedral so suspect this is 40858's marriage

He doesn't appear to have a surviving service record. His Soldiers' Died record says that he enlisted in North Berwick, Haddingtonshire, and that he was previously number 1265, R. Scots.

His medal roll record shows overseas service with...

image.png.de7ce8afe2f48d551a3b472f5be019e8.png

The issue of Scottish Rifles (medal roll and derived MIC) verses SDGW and the CWGC record of (8th) Royal Scots is difficult to resolve. My guess would be that the info on the CWGC site ("Son of James and Christina C. Addison, of Lea Shaw House, Holloway, Matlock, Derbyshire. Formerly a full Corporal in the 2nd/8th Bn. Royal Scots.") results from the return of the Verification Form sent to the family, and what they supplied.

Taking that on face value, and that he was previously numbered 1265, from near number 8/Royal Scots men who have surviving papers you appear to get:

1253 McLauchlan - attested 26.9.1914

1255 Cunningham - attested 25.9.1914

1259 Davidson - attested 24.9.1914

1265

1268 Gallagher - attested 29.9.1914

1269 MacKenzie - attested 29.9.1914

1271 McConnachie - attested 30.9.1914

1273 Berg - attested 2.10.1914

1278 McLean - attested 3.10.1914

In terms of his overseas service 'in anger' his previous UK service unit may be irrelevant, as the medal roll record indicates that when he first arrived overseas he was then 'attached' to 20 Infantry Base Depot (in Etaples) before being transferred to the 10/11 Highland Light Infantry, and was then renumbered as 40055.

40032 Seggie - arrived at 20 IBD as a Royal Scot, and was transferred to the HLI (renumbered) and posted to the 10/11 Bn whilst there on 9.9.1916 - before joining them 'in the field' on 10.9.1916.

40058 Falconer - arrived at 20 IBD as a Royal Scot, and was transferred to the HLI (renumbered) and posted to the 10/11 Bn whilst there on 10.9.1916 - before joining them 'in the field' on 13.9.1916.

Unfortunately, the 10/11 Bn war diary (TNA or Ancestry) doesn't record drafts/reinforcements being received. I might have got it wrong, but it would seem that he may well have died a couple of days after having been sent to the line.

Regards

Chris

For # 40055 Addison the effects shows he had a net war gratuity of £9.

Running this through my calculator tells us:

image.png.61d06341da2f031533018f797955aeb4.png

It shows us though that if his war gratuity was paid as an acting corporal then it diesn't tie in with Chris' deductions above. If we however try the war gratuity as being paid as a Private then it fits with Chris' details.

Walter Walker was previously 1240 Royal Scots.

Soldier's Effects gives Nok as mother and sole legatee as Agnes and that I am afraid makes him Clarence's younger brother. Walter born 1894.

Note he follows same path as Addison who is on previous page of medal roll. After some time with 10/11 HLI he then gets moved to 18 HLI. So similar RS numbers and HLI numbers

Listed as wounded in War Office Casualty List of 3/12/16. Residence North Berwick. Serving with HLI

George Easton Moffat.  174th Company.  Machine Gun Corps (Infantry)

Private 33153

Died: 26/3/17

Interesting one, the 179 Company war diary shows that on 26th March 1917 2,3,and 4 sections baths and clean up, while 1 section was improving MG positions,  Two other ranks were sent to hospital sick whilst "1 O.R. died in hospital (fracture of skull)."  The CWGC Register states died of wounds, whereas SDGW stated 'Died' which usually means an accidental death or sickness.

George Easton Moffatt the son of William and Elizabeth Moffatt and elder brother of Annie. He originally enlisted on the 1st December 1914, age seventeen, in the 2/8 Battalion as 1592 Royal Scots. The 2/8th was a reserve Territorial Force unit and did not serve overseas.  The TF recruited from age seventeen so there was no great subterfuge, though he may have added a few months to his age.  The Army required a soldier to be nineteen before he could be sent on active service overseas therefore he remained on home service until posted to the Machine Gun Corps.

He joined the MGC at Grantham around the end of April 1916 ( probably on the 30th) but no later than the 1st May.  Now aged 19 he was almost certainly in a draft that  was posted to 67 Brigade MEF on the 4th July 1916.  The draft embarked from England on 5th July 1916 and disembarked Salonica 14 July.  They were taken on strength the same day..

A month later he was admitted to 28 General Hospital on 17 August 1916 suffering from malaria.  It must have been relatively serious because he was evacuated back to the UK.

We don't have a date but we know he was back at Grantham early 1917.  He was posted to 174 Company which was formed at Grantham and left there for Southampton on 23rd February 1917.  They embarked from Southampton on the 25th, arriving at Havre later that day.  Pte Moffatt was appointed Lance Corporal.

The Company first went into the trenches on the 7th March 1917.

L/Cpl Moffatt died of wounds, or injuries received at 5 CCS on the 26th March 1917 he was aged 19.  He was interred at Bray Military Cemetery.

That's pretty much where I got the initial info Mark. The work was started by a former pupil I believe.  No one at the school actually knew where the role of honour was, but with a bit of googling, we came up with that document.

James Carnaghan

From the link, there seems to be quite a bit on him already. A couple of other bits.

He appears to have been originally commissioned to the 12 (Reserve) Bn, 26th Regiment of Foot (aka the Cameronians).

His service file is held by the National Archives (link). Unfortunately, it isn't available to download.

It would appear that he was originally commissioned 14th August 1915.

His Soldiers' Effects record has his death "on or since" 20.10.1916. In the 2nd Battalion war diary (TNA or Ancestry) he is recorded as missing under a diary entry of 23rd October 1916. The diary does seem to record the comings and goings of officers. However, (whilst I may well have missed it), I didn't see a note for when 2/Lt Carnaghan arrived. The first I saw for him is on 10.8.1916 when it shows 'to hospital'.

As a general point, if any images of grave stones are needed, the good folk at British War Graves may be able to help - on a free of charge basis.
