The above officer served in the 10th Londons before the war and at Gallipoli where it seems he became a Captain. He was thereafter seconded to the MGC (21 Aug 16). He must have gained some other operational experience beforehand as he was posted to the MGC School on 14 Oct 16 as an Assistant Instructor. It appears that he was promoted to Major on 09 Nov 17 'whilst commanding a company' (LG). He was appointed as an Instructor on 14 Nov 17 'whilst employed with a British Military Mission' and he was still employed as such in 1918 being appointed 0l.GG or O1.GG - what is this? The mission was to the USA from Oct 17 to Nov 18.

It also seems that he retained his TA commission after the war as a Captain, being promoted to Major again on 23 Aug 22. He died, as a priest in Texas in 1952.

His personal file is at the NA, but can anyone fill in the detail, particularly any further deployed service after Gallipoli in 1916?

Many thanks.

Not strictly further military service in the sense you mean, but he did register for the US draft in 1942 in Texas. Then aged 52, he gave his place and date of birth as London, March 5th 1890.

He was recorded as 6 feet tall, weighed 195lbs, had gray balding hair and a ruddy complexion!

That date and place of birth ties up with the birth registered in the Bethnal Green District in the April to June quarter of 1890, (you had 42 days after the event to register the birth).

He turns up on the 1912 London Electoral register renting a first floor furnished room at 466 Hackney Road, Bethnal Green, from a Garnham Edmonds living at the same address.

Aged 37 it looks like sailed from Liverpool on the S.S. Aurania on the 8th October 1927, landing at New York on the 14th. He gave his occupation as Oil Field Transport. His last address in the UK was at Teddington, London and he was married.

There are many other trips after that but what I couldn't find was what I was actually looking for- him sailing with other members of a wartime Mission in 1917. In my experience these Missions do sometimes turn up on the passenger lists and members can often be just a tad precise with their titles \ roles.

I would assume he had resigned from the T.A. by the time of that sailing in 1927 at the very latest.

Hope that helps,

Peter

Hi All

A bit more family history, Garnham Edmonds ,as mentioned above by Peter, was Arthur's father, a butcher. He was a local Councillor  and Mayor and became MP for Bethnal Green North East  Constituency in 1922. He held the seat for one year only.
