Remembered Today:

SDGW and medal card don't match

I've found an individual on SDGW who could be a family member....the details look promising anyway.

He's 11835 Cpl John Thomas Boulton, 2/KOSB

CWGC doesn't add anything, he's listed just as J.Boulton

But the medal card has confused the issue, as on FmP it has 11836 A/Cpl Jonathan Boulton

So one digit out on the number and different first name. Any other sources that would sort this out?

I'm hoping the SDGW entry is correct.

Thanks in advance.

Soldiers' Effects Record has a 11835 John Thomas Boulton

Russ

His MIC and Medal Rolls have 11835 on them

This MIC:

Boulton

is issued to A/Cpl. John Boulton, 11835.

(Although the card clearly states K.O.S.B., Ancestry has mistranscribed it as King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry.)

This MIC is issued to 11836 K.O.S.B. Private Andrew McIntyre:

McIntyre

(Again the card clearly states K.O.S.B., but Ancestry has mistranscribed it as King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry.)

Thank you both.

Would seem that FmP has a bad transcription of that MIC then as well.

Looks as if John Thomas Boulton is the correct name.

Follow up question if I may...

Russ, you mention the Soldier's Effects Records.

I'm not familiar with them. Generally speaking, are they worth looking at? Do they add much information?

Enough to warrant paying money for......

Cheers

For 11835 Boulton it tells you that his father was called Thomas, and as it notes him as 'sole legatee' it points towards a will - available from here. Probably not worth the £10 charged to get it though. It also records the amount of War Gratuity that was paid. If there is no service file, as the amount was based on rank and length of service, given the DoD it can be used to back calculate a reasonable estimate of when service counted from.

They are one of the primary record sets for WW1 research (some people may say I'm a little biased) and they can often add a lot of detail which is otherwise missing in a person's background.

Hi,

Craig is the resident specialist on all things War Gratuity based.

The Soldiers' Effects records are available on Ancestry - link.

Thinking about that statement a bit more. The will itself may only be a few words on a form extracted from his pay book, and would come as a low resolution B&W scan of the original. However, it would probably give an address for his father.

Chris
