Krashkrash Posted 22 October , 2018 Share Posted 22 October , 2018 Good morning all, I come from Kitwe, on the copperbelt in Zambia. I have been tasked by the committee of the Moth in Kitwe to research any service men that lived on the copperbelt before joining up for the war. So far I have been able to find one name. Private 158, Charles Cairns Wilson Fowler Clayton. 1st Rhodesian Regiment. Died 7.2.1915 in German South West Africa. Following a trail of regiments at the time of WW1 in Northern Rhodesia thinking that some would have enlisted an African regiment like : Northern Rhodesian : African Defence Force Volunteer Defence Force Rifles Police BASC These there are the possibilities for men leaving Africa and enlisting in Britain. I would greatly appreciate if anyone can help so we can remember these men for future remembrance day. Looking forward to hearing from you. Kind regards Krashkrash
ss002d6252 Posted 22 October , 2018 Share Posted 22 October , 2018 He's not in the soldiers effect's records that I can see which would suggest he hadn't enlisted in Britain. Craig
Krashkrash Posted 22 October , 2018 Author Share Posted 22 October , 2018 Clayton, I think travelled from the farm in Mkushi (then Northern Rhodesia) to Salisbury to enlist with the 1st Rhodesian Regiment.
corisande Posted 22 October , 2018 Share Posted 22 October , 2018 If you go to CWGC website and search for, say, deaths of men in Rhodesia Regiment https://www.cwgc.org/find/find-war-dead/results?war=1&regiment=Rhodesia Regiment&servedWith=United%2BKingdom you get 95 deaths which you would need to look at one by one to see who came from Northern Rhodesia
corisande Posted 22 October , 2018 Share Posted 22 October , 2018 And looking further with other permutations, this from Northern Rhodesia Regiment gives over 300 men https://www.cwgc.org/find/find-war-dead/results?regiment=Northern%2BRhodesia%2BRegiment

Guest Posted 22 October , 2018 Share Posted 22 October , 2018 I have a local casualty for my area of London that should be one of your men- William Henry Tarbutt, Lieutenant, Northern Rhodesia Police- I will zap what I have when I have him written up. He appears to be related to the Percy Tarbutt who was much involved in mining in what was then Rhodesia, Northern Rhodesia, Zambia before the war. but the family connections are not yet full cracked. corisande Posted 22 October , 2018 Share Posted 22 October , 2018 And this is probably your best route. Get all Medal Index Cards for key word "Rhodesian". You need an Ancestry subscription (or use their free trial) https://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/collections/medalrolls/?f-F00061C3=rhodesian&f-F00061C3_x=1 And you get about 2000 men
