Guest Posted 21 October , 2018 Share Posted 21 October , 2018 A ceremony took place on the 14th October 2018 in commemoration of a 2 nd Lieut. James Johnson Northumberland Fusiliers. He is already the subject of this site with relevant confusion & it keeps piling up. The only true fact is that he was a member of the N'land Fusiliers. There are numerous possibilities for when he was born varying from 1882 to the supposed birth of 31st December 1889. I can confirm that according to GROs the death of a James Bulmer Johnson was recorded in the 1st Qtr 1943 Plymouth Devon. I can also further confirm there is no record of a James B or Bulmer Johnson with a born in N'land. The only record of a James Bulmer Johnson is 1895 Filey Yorkshire , mother Bulmer. He enlisted into the Royal Horse Guards as James Johnson in Newcastle upon Tyne on 13th Oct. 1914 with the rank of Tpr. and a service no. 1836. He rose to the rank of Cpl.Major and bypassed 3 promotions to 2nd Lieut. This is a work in progress to prove that our authorities have got it all wrong. The latest claim is that as James Bulmer Johnson he was born in Stobswood N'land. I have today checked the 1891 census and there is again no record, James Johnson Morpeth Herald_0001.pdf
ss002d6252 Posted 21 October , 2018 Share Posted 21 October , 2018 Can't be many James Bulmer Johnson's out there but... He can't be the FIley man. There is a service record for a #21601 James Bulmer Johnson, born Filey, and age 19 on enlistment in 1914. This matches the 1895 birth in Filey however this man was discharged in 1920. https://www.findmypast.co.uk/search/results?firstname=james+bulmer&firstname_variants=true&lastname=johnson&sourcecountry=great+britain Craig
ss002d6252 Posted 21 October , 2018 Share Posted 21 October , 2018 (edited) #1836 RHG gives his age as 25 yrs and 285 days on 13 Oct 1914 . States he was born in Widdrington but he enlists only as James Johnson, no middle name. At the time he states his father is Robert Johnson of 103 Hugh Gardens, Benwell. In 1911 Hugh Gardens has Robert Johnson b1851 in Tweedmouth along with his wife Elizabeth, b 1853 in Berwick. They have have their Elizabeth, b1889 at Widdrington, James, b1882 at Widdrington and Christina, b1894, at Widdrington. On this basis it looks like he knocked a few years off on enlistment. On the 1901 census he is recorded as James H Johnson. Birth registraton for 1882 has him as James Johnson, born Morpeth district. Mother was nee Johnston. RaySearching Posted 22 October , 2018 Share Posted 22 October , 2018 Atthey Forum pal Corisande has already researched James Johnson ( other researchers and authors have also researched him) Here is a link to Corisande's website I suggest you have a look at it As can be seen the address on James Johnson's Mic 103 Hugh Gardens, Benwell is the address where James Johnson can be found residing with his widowed mother and siblings on the 1911 census (His parentage is in no doubt) Take into account that the name Bulmer may be a red herring a nickname he was known as and not his true birth name As in John (Basher) Smith Ray
