Mark1959 Posted 19 October , 2018 Share Posted 19 October , 2018 (edited) Welcome to the forum. This appears to be your man https://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/58037/spittle,-/ Manchester Regiment, 12th Battalion, Number 61308 at time of death He was formerly 19261 of the South Staffordshire Regiment and 31244 of the South Lancashire Regiment. Went to the Dardinells/Gallipolli 25/10/1915. Medal Roll shows when abroad with 7th S Staffs, then 7th S Lancs then 12th Manchesters All the above indicate he died of his wounds. Born and enlisted Bilston War Gratuity of £13 went to his widow Mary Ann. There is a Hospital admission record for him whilst serving with B Company 7th S Lancs. Admitted to Queen Alexandra, Military Hospital, Millbank, London on 11/6/17. Discharged 3/7/17. Other observation say " C Depot. Hospital Ship Jan Breydel. Metropolitan Hospital." which I suspect is his route to the hospital. It also states 1 year 5 month with field force - i.e overseas and 2 year 9 months service overall. Ailment: "Gunshot wound VIII left arm. [VIII]". The roman numerals describe the severity of the wound and are explained here https://www.longlongtrail.co.uk/soldiers/a-soldiers-life-1914-1918/the-evacuation-chain-for-wounded-and-sick-soldiers/classification-of-wounds-using-by-the-british-army-in-the-first-world-war/ The is an earlier record for this wounding. He is admitted to 11 Casualty Clearing Station on 3/6/17 - "Gunshot wound arm left" Looks as if he was wounded late 1915 whilst with S Staffs at Gallipoli Listed as "casualty in the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force reported: wounded" on the Casualty Lists issued by the War Office from 15th and 16th January 1916. Sadly his service papers do not seem to have survived Edited 19 October , 2018 by Mark1959
