rolt968 Posted 18 October , 2018 Share Posted 18 October , 2018 (edited) David Jolly, 13896, Scots Guards, enlisted in Ayr on 7 May 1915. His civilian occupation is given as "attendant". (Scots Guards enlistment register - ancestry.) Can anyone perhaps with local knowledge of Ayrshire suggest where he was an attendant. (The enlistment register is no help no-one else enlisted on the same day and no one on the same page enlisted in Ayr.) In 1911 he was a horseman (ploughman) on a farm in Fettercairn parish (Kincardineshire) (1911 Census - scotlandspeople) His father was the fifth generation tenant of a substantial farm in the Mearns. However it might not be surprising that David took a different job since he was the second son and he had five brothers. alf mcm Posted 18 October , 2018 Share Posted 18 October , 2018 He may have been an Attendant at Ailsa Asylum, Ayrshire. Male Attendants came from a wide variety of backgrounds. Regards, Alf McM

rolt968 Posted 28 October , 2018 Author Share Posted 28 October , 2018 Alf, that was a brilliant suggestion. I have found his attestation form (FMP). He was an attendant at Glengall Asylum - the previous name of Ailsa Asylum. Thanks again. RM
