Hello, All.

Can anyone shed any light on this...? I assume it’s a badge commemorating the success of the Fr 75mm field gun in WW1? Believe the Germans called it ‘the devil’. Is this something to do with The Marne??? Think it translates as something like, ‘peek a boo, there he is’. Any guidance aporeciated!!

Hi Popski,

I found a couple of similar badges when going through my grandfathers effects. He was in the Royal Naval Air Service,

and was stationed at several aerodromes in France and Belgium. I believe they were sold by the locals to make a little

bit of money, and were intended to be a good luck charm- like a St Christopher badge. My ones are also dated 1914/15

but don't understand the significance of that.

This was the subject of a thread on this forum about 4 years ago. I am not very tech savvy, but will see if I can find it again!

However I'm sure others may be able to bring the thread up again

Regards

Geoff

The earlier thread is about a slightly different badge/insigne.

The Art & History museum at La Rochelle describes it as a "brooch"

Maybe it's a kind of "new year's brooch" from the guys at 75 Artillery ?

See e.g. this postcard from the Delcampe site with sort of the same message:
