If I wanted to use the famous picture of Lord Kitchener ‘Your Country Needs You’

for a sign, would I be infringing copyright and who would I need to contact to get permission

Alfred Leete died in 1933 so I think copyright expired in 2003. Without even researching the law on it, there are so many copies and parodies of the poster that I am pretty sure it is out of copyright.

Dave,

thank you for your reply

i think it a safe bet, to carry on with my idea, as you said there are many items out there with Kitchener and those famous words on it.

I know now that a couple pieces of my research have appeared on websites and books.  Nobody asked me for permission to use them.
