PJS Posted 29 September , 2018 Share Posted 29 September , 2018 (edited) I am hoping to find some further details (ship name, date he sailed, port he sailed from, etc.) about my grandfather's arrival in Gallipoli in June/July 1915. He arrived in July 1915 as part of a draft of reinforcements for the 1/9th Manchester Regiment. B103: Jul 5th Taken on strength of Batt'n, Dardanelles. Jul 23rd Joined Battalion. Nom Roll, Dardanelles. Based on his B103, can I assume that he arrived at Lemnos (Mudros) on July 5, 1915 but then did not arrive at Cape Helles until the 23rd? 1/9th Battalion War Diary for July 23rd says: 5 Officers and 222 other ranks from 2/9th Bn. Manch. R. Capt. D. B. STEPHENSON, 2/Lt. W. M. BARRATT, Lt. S. W. RUTTENAU, 2/Lt. H. INGHAM, 2/Lt. W. G. GREENWOOD. His personal diary says:"I was one of a draft of reinforcements sent to Gallipoli in June 1915. I recall our arrival at Lemnos and our transfer there from troopship to lighters, our journey thence under cover of darkness, packed as we were, shoulder to shoulder, and as we eased into the shore, seeing the hull of SS River Clyde in the light of Very Lights and exploding gunfire, what an awesome welcome." The war diary for the Embarkation Officer at Mudros is here on Ancestry but does not obviously (at least to me) call out their arrival/departure there. Any help or direction is appreciated. PJS Posted 29 September , 2018 Author Share Posted 29 September , 2018 I pulled the following list of O.R.s from the Ashton Pals web site that lists them as arriving in Gallipoli on July 23, 1915. I added two additional men and sorted the list by Service No. I'm now thinking that the B.103 entry: "Jul 5th Taken on strength of Batt'n, Dardanelles." actually means that they sailed from the UK on July 5th, 1915. alantwo Posted 30 September , 2018 Share Posted 30 September , 2018 Peter The Officers mentioned in your first post and 227 men embarked on Ionian and left Devonport on 3rd July 1915, the port of destination is given as Egypt. One variation in spelling Lieutenant S.W. Ruttenam. I have found that the War Diary for the Embarkation Officer (Mudros) isn't 100% accurate, a number of ships arrivals and departures are missing, but it s a useful base to work from. Hope that helps. PJS Posted 30 September , 2018 Author Share Posted 30 September , 2018 Alan, Thank you very much that is very helpful indeed. It corroborates an unsubstantiated comment I found on the Ashton Pals web site that says that Private 2499 PERCY TAYLOR, "on July 3rd left Devonport for the Dardanelles with a draft of 250." What's curious is that having checked all 133 men on the list above, those that have a surviving Service Record all show the same B.103 entry: 5-7-1915 Taken on strength of Batt'n, Dardanelles. 23-7-1915 Joined Battalion. Nom Roll, Dardanelles. And their Military History Sheet (Short Service) says their MEF service started on 1-7-1915. So, it looks to me like 1-7-15 and 5-7-15 are both wrong and 3-7-15 is the correct date. Also, I'm quite sure that "Lieutenant S.W. Ruttenam" is really Lieutenant Sydney William Ruttenau. See here. Thanks Again Peter
alantwo Posted 30 September , 2018 Share Posted 30 September , 2018 Hi Peter The embarkation sheet is typed and the original spelling was Ruttenham but the ‘h’ was crossed out. The Embarkation Officer probably should have crossed out the ‘m’ as well. Alan
