100 years ago, today - commencement of The Battles of Megiddo

A hundred years ago, on this date - September 19th, The Battle of Sharon marked the commencement of the EEF offensive, later named The Battles of Megiddo.

Over the next few days, a hundred years ago, General Allenby's forces will crush and annihilate two Ottoman Armies (7 & 8), secure the north part of the Holy Land

and take the offensive into Syria.

The infantry won the battles of Sharon (including Tul Karem - HQ of the 8th Ottoman Army) and Samaria (including Nablus/Shechem - HQ of the 7th Ottoman Army). The

cavalry completed an incredible ride to the Vale of Jezreel, that put them in the rear of the defeated Ottoman forces. Over the next days, they won a few small-scale battles

(Usually up to a Brigade, though some are undoubtedly heroic!) but mostly capturing thousands of retiring defeated ottoman and German soldiers. The more important

cavalry battles/actions included el-Lajun, Birket el-Fuleh, Nazareth, Jenin, Haifa, Damiah, Abu Naj, Masudi, Samakh, Tiberias, Gisr Banat Yakub.

The Commemoration events here already started (Haifa, as Michael wrote about - see below)) and we have a few other events at various sites over the next few days.

A few other commemoration events will take place a few weeks ahead, after the actual centenary.
