Raster Scanning Posted 14 September , 2018 Share Posted 14 September , 2018 (edited) This is James Smallbones who served in India and the SA war with the Bedfordshire Regiment. He served as a Sgt in the 7th Bedfords in 1914/15. I am trying to put together a full biography of his military career and although this picture is pre war the information is for my research into the 7th Bedford's in the Great War. Can anyone identify the cap badge? His records survive but show only Bedfordshire Regiment service with a secondment to the Imperial Light Infantry in SA. Raster Scanning Posted 14 September , 2018 Author Share Posted 14 September , 2018 Before anyone suggests RA I am sure it is not :-)
Steven Broomfield Posted 14 September , 2018 Share Posted 14 September , 2018 And I'm convinced it is.

4thGordons Posted 14 September , 2018 Share Posted 14 September , 2018 (edited) The badge shown in the detail pic/closeup posted under the main pic absolutely doesn't look at all like Artillery to me. The scroll under it looks distinctive but I can tell what it might be. Chris Edit OK not a NORMAL artillery badge but how does " Royal Artillery Territorial Forces" badge look? (shorter barrel on cannon, more scrollwork underneath) All I have to go on is the picture in Gaylor (3rd Ed) plate 40 a. HERE (scrollwork still looks wrong to me) Edited 14 September , 2018 by 4thGordons add follow up
Dragoon Posted 14 September , 2018 Share Posted 14 September , 2018 It is 100% a Royal Artillery cap badge. The Territorial badge was the same size and shape of the standard gun badge but with a Laurel leaves in the top scroll instead of UBIQUE. Hope this helps Chris

Andrew Upton Posted 14 September , 2018 Share Posted 14 September , 2018 Another 100% agreement on the RA badge identification:
4thGordons Posted 15 September , 2018 Share Posted 15 September , 2018 I am not convinced that the scrolls across the bottom are a good match but confess to being more amenable to the idea now than when I first posted. Looking at Andrew's side by side (I also did this) they don't seem to correspond particularly well bur perhaps it is a combination of shadow and them partly slipping behind the chin strap. FROGSMILE Posted 15 September , 2018 Share Posted 15 September , 2018 Definitely RA to my eyes.
Dragoon Posted 16 September , 2018 Share Posted 16 September , 2018 The scrolls are probably bent round to the curve of the cap, making them look different. But I guarantee you its 100% RA. Chris
