Last thought for today.  Bearing his age in mind, are we perhaps looking for a man whose records were among the 60% or so of Great War records ….etc etc  and who did not serve overseas so who is to all intents and purposes invisible?

Max

That seems quite possible Max, short of any other more definitive information from the family.  Thank you for your perseverance with trying to get to the bottom of matters.  Comms are slow as I have to relay everything, but I will report any further feedback in due course.

Not being any good at identifying badges and having to rely on everyone else- but I have to confess my first thought on seeing it were that it was an AIF rising sun (which is one of the few I know) . I sugggested the RFA because if it is distorted and blurred I think that could be likely- but I do agree with the comment above re everything else is in clear focus so the badge is probably pretty accurate.

I thought illegitimacy and illiteracy were the raison d'etre for Public Schools?

You Grammar School boys can be so bitter.

I think that the overall shape and dimensions of the badge as a proportion of the cap are relatively clear Meg, and yet despite observing and researching such insignia for over 45 years now (as no doubt have some other posters), I don’t recognise it at all.  I’m really stumped.
