Gareth Davies Posted 12 September , 2018 Share Posted 12 September , 2018 I am after some ideas for some alternative hotels in the Arras/Somme area. The Mercure/HIE in Arras are great but I am going over next year with a group that are very keen on their food and wine and they like the idea of what I might call a country house hotel or a hunting lodge or some such. If they have a decent restaurant they don't need to be in a town. Does anyone have any recent experience and recommendations?
Fattyowls Posted 12 September , 2018 Share Posted 12 September , 2018 How big is the group Gareth? Pete.
Gareth Davies Posted 12 September , 2018 Author Share Posted 12 September , 2018 Fewer than 10. Probably 6 or 7 of us.
Ron Clifton Posted 13 September , 2018 Share Posted 13 September , 2018 (edited) Gareth http://www.univers.najeti.fr/ I have stayed there a couple of times and can thoroughly recommend the food. It is an eighteenth-century former seminary not far from Arras station. It does have disabled access, but it doesn't extend to all the rooms so if any of your party have a wheelchair I would suggest making this clear when (if) you book. There is some parking within a courtyard but otherwise street parking is not really feasible. For a more modern hotel, the Hotel du Golf, https://www.golfbreaks.com/hotel-arras., is attached to a golf course, and is not far from Arras airport. The food is good but not special, but clearly golfers are likely to be more demanding of good food than your average coach party, which tends to negotiate fixed and not too expensive menus. Gareth Davies Posted 13 September , 2018 Author Share Posted 13 September , 2018 Yes, I know it well having stayed there many times. As for golf, the less said the better. What we are really after is somewhere special in the country but I am not sure such a beast exists.
Ron Clifton Posted 13 September , 2018 Share Posted 13 September , 2018 If such a beast does exist, I am sure that Andre Coilliot would know. Do you know him? He lives in Beaurains and is a bigwig in Souvenir Francais. I'm afraid that I have lost his address although I corresponded with him many years ago. http://www.lavoixdunord.fr/331631/article/2018-03-09/avec-andre-coilliot-14-18-arras-au-coeur-des-combats Ron

German IR 169 Posted 16 September , 2018 Share Posted 16 September , 2018 (edited) I have a similar, but more basic question regarding lodging and tour planning for the Somme. I am planning my first trip to the Western Front battlefields in mid-late June 2019 with two friends. For the Somme portion, I will be arriving from the direction of Reims. I am looking at VRBO/Air B&B options, and appreciate tips on what local town would be convenient and offer decent lodging/dining alternatives. I would like to focus considerable time around Serre, given my interest in German Infantry Regiment 169, which defended the strong point from May - December 1916. Assuming I spend a few hours in the Serre and Bapaume areas, how feasible is it to see the highlights of the rest of the battlefield in a single day, would a second day be in order? I also welcome recommendations on private guides. Many thanks in advance. John Rieth Edited 16 September , 2018 by German IR

mva Posted 18 September , 2018 Share Posted 18 September , 2018 (edited) bonjour, John, Historial : https://www.historial.fr/en/battlefields-of-the-somme/circuit-of-remembrance/ and, in the east of the Dep. Somme, you shouldn't miss : https://sjmc.gov.au/ either (Australians) and for B&Bs : some are here : https://www.gites-de-france.com/liste.html, but there are others (often owned by British people) And, of course, you shouldn't miss the German cemeteries, eg (see below), where there may be some soldiers of the IR 169 - looking here https://www.volksbund.de/graebersuche.html may help, when searching for names (no indication of regiment), though there are some in the British cemeteries, where regiment is given. eg (not IR 169) Karl Dieckow (CWGC : https://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/6001439/dieckow,-karl/ ), but on Volksbund, ( https://www.volksbund.de/graebersuche/detailansicht.html?tx_igverlustsuche_pi2[gid]=c5627112bb606c022048d7726bbd702e&cHash=e7d9af3f459d24b847553424ca928a2f ) no indication that it is a Brit. cemetery ! Until June 2019, we have time to discuss all that ! kind regards, martine PS - and if you want to see where Otto Lais was in Spring 1918, Pierrepont, Contoire, "die Hölle im Montdidier-Bogen", it is a bit off track (but that's where I live) Edited 18 September , 2018 by mva ps
