Help needed please

I'm trying to help a friend of mine trace her great grandfather's history. All she knows is that he was in RH & RFA possibly during the war. (Service no. 1029739

 

She has no other details other than his name, Harry Farmer, as he was an orphan and had no birth certificate etc

Any ideas how I could go about trying to trace his details, she has applied to Glasgow RO but as she has such scant details, we're not holding out much hope.

 

Any help would be gratefully received

The only on-line record is the record of his attestation to the Royal Artillery 17 April 1915.  However, he served until 1927 so his record should be with the Ministry of Defence.  Give me a minute and I'll check.

He had served initially under service number 99848. The medal card - https://www.findmypast.co.uk/transcript?id=GBM/MCI/1197016 - indicates he was a shoeing smith and a driver.

I couldn't see any obvious service record on the post 1920 list.

It isn't clear who you have applied to in Glasgow?  As you have his number, even without a date of birth, if she has sent his death certificate, £30 and has certified she is or has consent from next of kin then I think you can hope for a result.  The RA Attestation book is clear about his dates.

I think we were just looking from opposite ends at the same time !
