Gallipoli Trench Maps - Drake Battalion RND

Recommended Posts

Going to Gallipoli peninsula shortly. Trying to locate some trench maps covering all sectors for some field walking. Particularly interested in Helles sector. Grandad (T. F. J. Churchill) was out there with Drakes in August/September 1915. Can anyone help with some trench maps along with any details as to specific location of Drake Battalion during the period my relative served? Thanks.

Until your disc of maps arrives then this may help a little

For most of the period which you are interested in the RND were in the line between Gully Ravine and Krithia Nullah (16 Aug-early Dec 1915)

The map below is a crop from one which appears in Capt Christopher Page's biography of A M Asquith, 'Command in the Royal Naval Division' [ISBN 1-86227-048-1]

Gully Ravine is clearly seen on the left and Krithia Nullah runs down the right

When not in Rest Camp, Drake Battalion was in the front line as follows:-

Mon 23 August - relieved 1st RM Battalion (1/RMLI) RND on the right of the line described by michaeldr at Post #5.

Monday 30 August - relieved by 1/RMLI.

Tuesday 7 September - relieved Howe Battalion in the centre of the RND sector.

Wednesday 15 September - relieved by Howe Battalion,

Wednesday 22 September - relieved an RMLI battalion (probably 2/RMLI) in the RND sector.

Wednesday 29 September - relieved by 2nd RM Battalion (2/RMLI)

Drake Bn casualties during August and September were approx.16 kia/dow and 5 died of disease (most dysentery). There were no major actions during the period.
