She is to receive a CWGC headstone. Violet Moberly is my great aunt. I am very grateful to all those contributing to the “In from the Cold” project who have lobbied for her and many others to be properly commemorated. Violet’s addition to the WW1 War Dead Roll comes just in time for the 100th anniversary of her death – she died in the Spanish Flu outbreak 2 days before the Armistice. I was not aware until reading your post that she is to receive a CWGC headstone - is this normally accompanied by any kind of ceremony? chrisharley9 Posted 9 October , 2018 Share Posted 9 October , 2018 Hello Andrew, The installation of the CWGC stone may take some time. Any ceremony would have to be arranged locally as CWGC normally do not do this. Cheers Chris
andrew moberly Posted 10 October , 2018 Share Posted 10 October , 2018 Thank you Chris. I knew that Violet and her parents were all buried together, but had forgotten (until looking again at the photo of Violet's grave) that her nephew Geoffrey Walter Moberly is also commemorated there - although as he was lost in action at sea in 1942 he is not actually buried there. It is curious that Violet and Walter, who died in different World Wars, are now commemorated together on the CWGC official list of casualties as well as on a gravestone in Oxford - and sad that only Violet will ever have the CWGC headstone to which they are now both entitled. andrew moberly Posted 15 October , 2018 Share Posted 15 October , 2018 The CWGC have told me that Violet Moberly will have a Gallipoli marker memorial. I had to ask them what that was, and they explained it is "a stone tablet which is on a concrete pedestal fixed with bronze cramps. The tablet usually measures 380mm by 280mm and is 50mm thick". clive_hughes Posted 15 October , 2018 Share Posted 15 October , 2018 Andrew, Here's one I took myself - it's set within an older grave, the naming on which had deteriorated. Clive
