Remembered Today:

November 11

This might have been touched on elsewhere on the site, but we were wondering about how to mark this year's centenary of Armistice Day. What are other people doing? Is there anything planned in France or Belgium that we shouldn't miss?

Obviously, it is getting late (typical of us, last-minute planners!), so accommodation etc might be a problem, but we'd be grateful for any suggestions.

(Sorry, this should probably have been in the Battlefield Touring section, but I don't know how to delete/move it!)

bonjour,

each French town / village has a 11/11 commemoration (each year, not only this year). This year, there will probably be exhibitions and 'activities' in many towns & villages. For the Somme, some are listed here : http://www.somme14-18.com/agenda/liste, but not everything is listed there

kind regards from the Somme, martine

Thanks, Martine... that was how we started thinking about this: going to the ceremony in our local village in the Perigord. Perhaps we should just do that. At least accommodation won't be a problem!

We'd be interested in going to Verdun, if there's anything on, but we know from our visit there earlier this year that accommodation definitely can be a problem.

Yes, Verdun is for the French what 'Somme 1916' is for the British ...

But, as you have a 2nd home in Périgord : just as you do it in the UK, many villages do research about the soldiers who died in WW1, they surely will show the results in November

an example (village : CALVIAC) for my French forum : https://forum.pages14-18.com/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=29918&hilit=Périgord&start=10

Périgord : eg this : http://www.pnr-perigord-limousin.fr/Sejourner/Ou-sortir/Centenaire-de-l-armistice-de-la-grande-guerre

I suggest you should contact your 'Communauté de Communes' - or the museums nearby

kind regards from the Somme

There's going to be a lot in Belgium, but the Belgian German Friendshipteam will be at Edinburgh Castle with an international delegation of Army and Police.
