Remembered Today:

Moss Side Military Hospital, Maghull

I want to write a brief piece on Moss Side Military Hospital at Maghull, near Liverpool, where a lot of troops with shell-shock were treated and early specialist training in therapy was initiated for RAMC and other doctors during WWI. Has anybody got any materials or good sources on this hospital that you can point me to?

Thanks.

Hi Roger

Did a Red Cross search for any personnel recorded as having worked there. These are the results

https://vad.redcross.org.uk/Card?hosp=MAGHULL&id=231176

Just the one record found. There may be more under just "Moss side hospital" but that tends to bring up Manchester addresses and hospitals - and rather a lot of them!

Good luck

David

Thanks David for these links. I have seen most but not all of these before and did try to make contact with John Rowlands who is mentioned in the first link, though so far without success. There is mention in another source of some 200 (mostly RAMC) doctors passing through the shell shock training there and it would be interesting to identify these if possible.

Any further ideas and sources most welcome.

Thanks

Roger

A search of Ancestry's Medical Registers using exact phrase "Moss Side Hospital Maghull" and the war years produced 4 hits, sadly I don't have a subscription to take it further

The Liverpool Records Office acquisition (link 2 in my post 3 above) would hopefully provide a comprehensive list of names for you.

Thanks again David. I've got it on my agenda to visit the Liverpool Records Office to look at their staff registers. Related to this, its such a pity that the records of RAMC officers who were on temp commissions have not survived.

I wasn't aware of that.

When you do get names from the record office it will still be worth checking with TNA as it looks like some who were originally in the Territorial Force but transferred are there e.g. http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C11510898

FYI

The old Moss Side Hospital site is currently under development as a housing estate. As far as I’m aware there is no trace left of the original buildings.
