Remembered Today:

The French at Gallipoli

Readers of this thread might be interested in the map below. It was found at a flea market in Clermont-Ferrand over 20 years ago, which combined with the hand-written annotations give it as the former property of a member of the CEO. There's no name or unit markings so unfortunately it's earlier provenance is unknown.

It's a cut-down of sheet 1 of the British 1:40,000 series produced in 1915 from 1-inch sheets of 1908, which themselves were taken from a French survey made during the Crimean War in 1854. There are online copies here. https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Map_of_Gallipoli_scale_1-40000_War_Office_map_683_c_1915.jpg

Apart from being wonderfully worn and grubby its most interesting features are the hand drawn tactical markings in black ink, which I've tried to show in close up. I'm convinced that these were made on the spot, contemporary with events. I'm no expert whatsoever in this campaign so perhaps readers could add some insights?

In the squares around 169, 170, 176 and 177 there are markings which I guess relate to the battles of Kereves Dera/Krithia. There appear to be defensive lines of some sort, a perimeter around Achi Baba, a row of 3 circles with a cross (a bit like an OS church symbol) and a gun position marked by a line with short dashes either side, like an arithmetic division sign.

Around 186, 187, 194, 195 there are more defences, eg to the west of Saghon Dere. Also the words '450 teites'. I guess 450 is a height but what is a teites? To the SW of 186 there are '4 batteries de long' which I assume means the 120mm L modele 1878, of which the CEO had a unit commanded by Capitaine Delval. 'Toits retrenchements' at the top of 195. 4 more 'longs' on the left edge of 187.

'Redoutes' in square 204. The numeral 4 appears in several places, perhaps the 4th something?

In square 184, two guns near point 472, in the road. And another gun in the sea, lower left? I didn't think the French sector extended this far north?

More guns in 178.

Anyway, lots of mysteries there, any help to put context to them would be much appreciated.

Thank,

John

Hi John, great map ! thank you for sharing it.

It might belonged to a soldier of the 175ème Regiment d'Infanterie which fought in the Dardanelles. One of the bases of the regiment was at Riom, not far from Clermont-Ferrand. Who knows...

Thanks for the suggestion Sly. I'll have a look in the 175's war diary. I'm wondering if the owner was an artilleryman, he marked in lots of allied guns which might have been of less interest to an infantryman.

Regards,

John

This thread started off with a question about the French at Gallipoli, with a particular focus on the Tirailleurs Sénégalais.

Below is a list of some French soldiers that were awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal. The source of the data is War Office List 1A. Whilst the primary source and its reference is WO 388/6/5, I have used the secondary source of Howard Williamson's book. (The Distinguished Conduct Medal Awarded to The Allied Armies by The British Government)

I cannot determine the ethnicity of Calixte Dodni. Whilst the former is a popular French forename, the latter is understood to be an Indian surname. I was unable to locate a <<matricule militaire>> for him. Of the men listed below, I would guess that Baba, Piau and Suleyman were Tirailleurs Sénégalais.

[content now moved to separate post]

Soldat Jean Calas, 54e Régiment d'Infanterie Coloniale
Sergent Calixte Dodni, 54e Régiment d'Infanterie Coloniale
Adjudant Bonaventure Lafont, 54e Régiment d'Infanterie Coloniale
Sergent François Pietri 54e Régiment d'Infanterie Coloniale
Caporal Victor Ruellan, 54e Régiment d'Infanterie Coloniale
Soldat Jean Varengo, 54e Régiment d'Infanterie Coloniale

Soldat Makasson Baba, 56e Régiment d'Infanterie Coloniale
Sergent Ferdinand Dombel, 56e Régiment d'Infanterie Coloniale
Sergent Antoine Farges, 56e Régiment d'Infanterie Coloniale
Sergent Emile Luguern, 56e Régiment d'Infanterie Coloniale
Caporal Piau Piau, 56e Régiment d'Infanterie Coloniale
Sergent Jean Marie Suzanne, 56e Régiment d'Infanterie Coloniale
Soldat Philippe Vidal, 56e Régiment d'Infanterie Coloniale

Caporal Louis Charlet, 57e Régiment d'Infanterie Coloniale
Sergent-Major Henri Ducay, 57e Régiment d'Infanterie Coloniale
Caporal Marcel Lebrasseur, 57e Régiment d'Infanterie Coloniale
Sergent Walter Mohr, 57e Régiment d'Infanterie Coloniale
Adjudant Denis Rigoud, 57e Régiment d'Infanterie Coloniale
Sergent Lucien Roulet, 57e Régiment d'Infanterie Coloniale
Sergent Fourrier Louis Frédéric Seitz, 57e Régiment d'Infanterie Coloniale

Sergent Jules Andarelli, 58e Régiment d'Infanterie Coloniale
Soldat Germain Barrau, 58e Régiment d'Infanterie Coloniale
Soldat Henri Daudet, 58e Régiment d'Infanterie Coloniale
Sergent-Fourrier Henri Raffin, 58e Régiment d'Infanterie Coloniale
Sergent Sidibe Suleyman, 58e Régiment d'Infanterie Coloniale
Soldat Jean Pierre Tirefort, 58e Régiment d'Infanterie Coloniale
Caporal Louis Vastel, 58e Régiment d'Infanterie Coloniale

The 54e Régiment d'Infanterie Coloniale, originally known as the 4e Régiment Mixte Coloniale, was 2 battalions of Tirailleurs Sénégalais and a battalion of Infanterie Coloniale, the latter being caucasian Frenchmen. It was the same for all four of these regiments listed above in this post.

From the same source, here is a list of men from the two Metropolitan Army infantry regiments that were at Gallipoli, who arrived freshly kitted out in the new horizon blue uniform. There are some pictures of the 175e in the trenches at Gallipoli that are in the IWM collection, the troops being merely 30 yards apart from the Turkish infantry.

I am a bit puzzled by their presence. I had understood these units were manned in peacetime by conscripts, and were not to serve overseas, just like the Territorial Force of the British Army. Presumably some law was passed that allowed units of France's Metropolitan Army to serve overseas during the "current" conflict.

Sergent Louis Ballot, 175e Régiment d'Infanterie
Adjudant Roger Barrau, 175e Régiment d'Infanterie
Médécin Auxilaire Charles Chabrut, 175e Régiment d'Infanterie
Sergent Louis Dillet, 175e Régiment d'Infanterie
Soldat Alexandre Horrerau, 175e Régiment d'Infanterie
Soldat Pascal Madray, 175e Régiment d'Infanterie
Caporal Jean-Baptiste Moine, 175e Régiment d'Infanterie
Sergent Jean Richard, 175e Régiment d'Infanterie

Sergent Raphael Anazan, 176e Régiment d'Infanterie
Adjudant Basile Casta, 176e Régiment d'Infanterie
Sergent-Major Antoine Chastrusse,  176e Régiment d'Infanterie
Caporal Pierre Dumartin,  176e Régiment d'Infanterie
Soldat Auguste Goug,  176e Régiment d'Infanterie
Soldat Maurice Hommet, 176e Régiment d'Infanterie
Soldat Jean Sérandour, 176e Régiment d'Infanterie

Listed below are the men of the one battalion of Foreign Legion and the five Zouave battalions, taken from the same source as earlier, who were awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal.

The Foreign Legion were classified as <<Infanterie Coloniale>> for service in the colonies, along with the other units of Infanterie Coloniale (manned by caucasian Frenchmen). (The nearest concept in the English speaking world would be the European Infantry regiments that existed prior to 1858 with the Honourable East India Company.) [Correction: Foreign Legion were classified as <<Armée d'Afrique>> and not as <<Infanterie Coloniale>>, even though their deployment was not limited to Africa] The Zouaves were primarily made up of caucasian Frenchmen too, and were part of the <<Armée D'Afrique>>, along with numerous units of Tirailleurs Indigenes. (There does seem to be a frequent misunderstanding among English speakers that <<Infanterie Coloniale>> must be locally recruited in the various colonies.)

Adjudant Billarou, 1e Régiment de marche d'Afrique
Sergent Major Léon Boé, 1e Régiment de marche d'Afrique
Soldat Henri Bonamy, 1e Régiment de marche d'Afrique
Soldat Edmond Castel, 1e Régiment de marche d'Afrique
Soldat Albert Cohen, 1e Régiment de marche d'Afrique
Soldat 2e Classe Jean Mangion, 1e Régiment de marche d'Afrique
Sergent Louis Mayer, 1e Régiment de marche d'Afrique
Soldat Antoine Siutes, 1e Régiment de marche d'Afrique

Soldat Alexandre Auzeby, 2e Régiment de marche d'Afrique
Sergent Louis Barbier, 2e Régiment bis de marche de Zouaves
Soldat Georges Cormary, 2e Régiment de marche d'Afrique
Soldat Pierre Larosa, 2e Régiment de marche d'Afrique
Adjudant Chef Eugène Moris, 2e Régiment de marche d'Afrique
Adjudant Chef Paul Pantin, 2e Régiment de marche d'Afrique
Adjidant Chef Maurice Pommert, 2e Régiment de marche d'Afrique
Caporal Georges Vincente, 2e Régiment de marche d'Afrique

The following men are also understood to have been decorated with the Distinguished Conduct Medal for Gallipoli. (These were inadvertently posted in a prior post.) I may well be mistaken in my identification (or otherwise) of pertinent units.

Sergent Ambroise Marius Bœuf, 4e Régiment d'Infanterie Coloniale
Caporal Marie Guegou, Etat-Major du 2e Brigade Coloniale
Sergent Albert Samuel Naquet, Etat-Major de la 4e Brigade
Gendarme Jean Henri Ourliac, Prévôté de la 2e Division
Caporal Maurice Souchet, Cie des miltraileuses de la 4e Brigade
Maréchal des Logis Trémeau, Prévôté de la 1er Division
Maréchal des Logis Vigier, Train de Quartier Général de la 1er Division

"Dodni" must be Calixte DODANE.

His matricule is here:

(Hit the "HD" button!)

Under "Blessures, citations" it confirms that he was awarded the "Medaille de la conduite distinguée, décoration anglaise", but doesn't say when.

It says he was sergent from 21.2.1915 and was with 54e RIC from 22.5.1915 to 28.2.1915 [sic, obviously an error for 1916 or '17]. Then promoted to adjudant in 1918.

Hope this helps!

Thank you Adrian, much appreciated. It's always good to cross-reference names on lists, to determine that the correct spelling has been recorded.

I have been struggling with the composition of the French artillery units.

As Keith's OoB is undated, I assume that it is for April 1915 (?)

Also of possible interest is that for August 1915, given below per the British Official History, Military Operations, Gallipoli Vol.II,

Corps Expéditionnaire d'Orient

Commander: General Bailloud

1st Division: General Brulard

6 Batteries of Artillery (75mm)

2 Batteries of Artillery (65mm)

2nd Division:

9 Batteries of Artillery (75mm)

Corps Artillery:

1 Heavy Battery, 120mm, long (4.7-inch)

1 Heavy Battery, 155mm, long (6-inch)

2 Heavy Batteries, 155mm, short (6-inch)

2 Siege guns, 240mm (9.4-inch)

Battery of naval guns

I have the following among those nine batteries of the 2nd Divisional Artillery

There's a medal to an Able Seaman of the Batterie de 14e de Marine which I understand to be Navy proper rather than of the <<Troupes de Marine / Coloniale>> establishment. From this body of men, there is the 3e Régiment d'Artillerie Coloniale commanded by Capitaine Marcel Charles Trocme, whose surname appears on the artillery map plot.

The 1st Division's artillery appears to be:

The 47ème & 48ème batteries of the 2e Régiment d'Artillerie de Montagne, equipped with 65mm guns.

Three batteries of 1er Régiment d'Artillerie coloniale de Campagne (31e, 32e & 33e batteries)

Three batteries of 8e Régiment d'Artillerie coloniale de Campagne (also 31e, 32e & 33e batteries, confusingly)

With effect from 1 April 1917, they were to become the 1er Groupe and 2e Groupe respectively of the 201e Régiment d'Artillerie coloniale de Campagne of 6 batteries.

To conclude, a while ago, the following English language book got a mention, following an updated edition being published in 2019

RELUCTANT PARTNER

Owing to an oversight, there was a delay in publishing the book review via Facebook, which was then done on 3 May. The book reviewer is Peter Hart.

I had put together a response to answer the very specific question on Tirailleurs Sénégalais, and was not looking to quote chapter and verse as to all and sundry of the French units.

Forum pal Alantwo, who has an excellent map of French artillery in the 8th post on this thread, has put me on to the Order of Battle being within the various enclosures to the war diary. If you are interested, the order of battle as at 1 June 1915 is contained within five jpg images. The document is marked in pencil as "P.K.34"

The enclosures to the war diary, including the aforementioned order of battle, are in the file 26 N 75/10 Pièces justicatives 3 avril-16 septembre 1915

Of the 213 images, it is 132 to 136 that contain the pertinent info. It provides some clarity with regard to the four squadrons of cavalry. Some of these men, with their light coloured jackets, would appear to have been misidentified as Zouaves, and not as Chasseurs d'Afrique, in IWM image Q 13231 which appears in post 65 of this thread. (Caption: 'Men ..... seen in camp at Sedd el Bahr, sorting out salvaged kit and equipment.')

The original post of this thread did ask as to what happened to those men of the Tirailleurs Sénégalais after Gallipoli. The simple answer is that they all ended up in France in 1916. The explanation is somewhat more complex.

8e BTS and 12e BTS had been in the 7e Régiment Mixte Colonial. This formation was renamed on 16 August 1915 as the 57e Régiment d'Infanterie Coloniale. The composition of the regiment was changed on 11 December 1915, so it comprised 8e BTS and 12e BTS and a third battalion of troops from 1er BTS and 2e BTS, comprised wholly of Tirailleurs and losing its "mixte" nature. The regiment left Gallipoli for Lemnos on 12 December 1915. The regiment disembarked at Toulon on 5 May 1916. The constituent battalions were renumbered as 66e BTS, 67e BTS, 70e BTS. The regiment deployed to the western front from the 5th June 1916 to 27 October 1916. On the 10th July 1916, 70e BTS left the regiment and was replaced by 64e BTS.

7e BTS had been in the 8e Régiment Mixte Colonial. This formation was renamed on 16 August 1915 as the 58e Régiment d'Infanterie Coloniale. The composition of the regiment was changed on 10 December 1915, so it comprised 7e BTS and also 3e BTS and 4e BTS, comprised wholly of Tirailleurs and losing its "mixte" nature. The regiment was gradually withdrawn from Gallipoli to Lemnos from 16 December 1915 to 6 January 1916. On 22 May 1916, the constituent battalions were renumbered as 1er BTS, 68e BTS, 69 BTS. (I have an unsourced note that 7e BTS became 68e BTS.) As at 18 June 1916, the regiment left Fréjus, to join the 2e Division d'Infanterie Coloniale in the 1er Corps d'Armée Colonial. They deployed near Fontaine-lès-Cappy on 25 June 1916, and subsequently took part in the Battle of the Somme.

The reconstituted 54e Régiment d'Infanterie Coloniale left Gallipoli for Lemnos on the night of 1-2 January 1916, and the reconstituted 56e Régiment d'Infanterie Coloniale had been at Mytilene since 1 January 1916. Both regiments would take part in the Salonika campaign.

The history of the 54e makes particular reference to how the Tirailleurs were suffering during the cold spell, as mentioned in post #57 of this thread. Perhaps this explains why the regiments were reorganised in December 1915, so as to allow the practice of "wintering" to take place in future?

My original intention was to look at some of the details on the Tirailleurs Sénégalais, but it is not straightforward. Given that their battalions were grouped in various régiments de marche, each of which as two names, they are associated with these, rather than being listed as Tirailleurs Sénégalais. It is probably easiest to perform searches on the MdH website, doing searches by a given nationality, for a given year or for given months, and dying in specific countries.

I ended up going down a rabbit hole, by finding a similar issue with the 1er Régiment de Marche d’Afrique. For the men of the Foreign Legion battalion, I did find some clues as to these men via the mémorialgenweb domain. This is a great site, crowdsourced by volunteers, that I can tell, and in some ways superior to the MdH site. In terms of determining which men of the 1er RMA were in the Legion battalion, versus in the other two battalions that were made up of Zouaves, the one pointer is to try and determine who is not French-born.

MdH has a card for each fatality. I do not know the correct designation, so I will nickname it the "mortality index card." When these MICs were completed for men of the Legion that died at Gallipoli, what I am seeing on the card is "1er Régiment de Marche d’Afrique - Bon de Légion." When I look at a card for a Zouave, it does not have the equivalent of the suffixed notation that I have marked in blue font.

The bad news is that this is not recorded and indexed on the MdH site. The good news is that this does appear within the greater results set when a search is done on the mémorialgenweb domain.

I was initially able to manually source some interesting data from the mémorialgenweb domain. I have then gone through the MdH results, to look at not French-born fatalities, and identify more men of the legion.

Below is the data that I have been able to source. I have no interest in corrections, additions etc, but hope it is of interest to forum Pals. Any mistakes are mine.

The cards also record place of enlistment, year of conscription, regimental service number, place of death, nature of death.

Officers of the French Foreign Legion, listing of "Monument aux Morts de la Légion Etrangère"

Phil,

The British Official History, Gallipoli Vol.II gives the total French contribution as being 79,000, of whom 47,000 became casualties (killed, wounded & sick)

regards

Michael

I keep seeing varying numbers for Gallipoli, and most of these numbers do not add up.

I have seen a figure of French troop strength reaching a peak of 42,000 which sounds in line for 2 divisions of 24 battalions, four cavalry squadrons and various supporting elements of artillery and train.

For a lot of the BEF infantry battalions in August 1914, they had a war establishment of 1,000 men, but you will see double that on the 1914 Star medal roll. Are there equivalent stats for the British at Gallipoli stating (i) establishment strength of unit and (ii) actual number of men who served at Gallipoli in that unit? 79,000 in two divisions sounds ludicrously high, but if you factor in those who were rotated out due to disease and wounds, it sounds plausible, as long as the ability to replenish losses is there.

As I understand it, the figure of 18% of the French presence being Tirailleurs Sénégalais (seven battalions) is attributable to a calculation made in Jacques Frémeaux's 2006 book about the contribution of France's colonies during WW1.

Did the revitalised book from Cassar shed any light on this? Are there french sources that corroborate what appears in English secondary sources?

Thanks
Keith

Keith,

Without going into this too deeply, my first impression is that the figure of 79,000 looks right, if it is for the whole campaign and not just for one specific moment in that campaign.

Your figure of 42,000 is also given by Jean-Charles Jauffret in his paper (23 April 1996) reproduced in The Straits of War (Sutton Publishing Ltd., 2000: a collection of commemorative lectures given at Holy Trinity Church, Eltham).

A peak of 42,000 was reached at about 4th May 1915, however, French casualties between 5th & 8th May were 246 officers & 12,632 men.

79,000 looks like the total employed during the whole campaign and I don't think that there is a suggestion that they were all there at one particular time. In the same way the figure given for the total Allied participation is 530,000. However Hamilton had no where near that number to call upon at any one specific time.
