sarahtrinity Posted 29 August , 2018 Share Posted 29 August , 2018 Hi, Does anyone know anything about the Gilroes Hospital in Leicestershire? My grandfather's cousin died there 30th July 1917. He'd enlisted in the Northants Regt., then had moved to the 6th Bedfordshire. Looking at the Beds War Diary the greatest cause of injury and death in July was by gassing. The 6th had no casualties in June, however he could have been injured earlier. Does anyone know if Gilroes hospital specialised in gas victims or anything else? And do the records survive anywhere? He was buried back in his home village in Northamptonshire. Thanks for reading this. Sarah Trinity
Admin DavidOwen Posted 29 August , 2018 Admin Share Posted 29 August , 2018 Hi Red Cross records are sparse (but working again) and these two VADs both worked there performing massage. https://vad.redcross.org.uk/Search?hosp=Gilroes The hospital itself had been set up as an isolation / small pox treatment centre with some 200+ beds.
