horatio2 Posted 27 August , 2018 Share Posted 27 August , 2018 (edited) Welcome to the GWF. Having completed his 5 years in the Fleet as a stoker on a Special Service (SS) engagement (his engagement papers are now held at the Fleet Air Arm Museum) he was transferred to the Royal Fleet Reserve (RFR) for 7 years with RFR number Portsmouth B.6870 (in addition to his SS Official Number. On mobilisation from the RFR for WW1 he was first drafted to the Mercantile Fleet Auxiliary (MFA) CHINKOA (a squadron supply ship). Although borne on the books of HMS EXCELLENT for pay and admin purposes he was actually serving in the destroyer HMS DESPERATE in the Portsmouth Local Defence Flotilla. DESPERATE was transferred to be parented by another depot ship at Portsmouth, HMS VERNON, on 1 January 1916. HMS GLORY was a depot ship in the White Sea, Russia. He was part of her ship's company for the dates shown. On 13 February 1919 he was demobilised at the war's end but he was mobilised again from the RFR for the national miners' strike April - June 1921. Finally demobilised 9 June 1921.
