Hi,

I would like to know (if anyone can tell me) - what is a Service Battalion? What's the difference between them and a regular one?

Thanks in advance,

Wade

Each regiment had regular battalions and (mostly) territorial battalions before WW1. The New Army, raised by Kitchener in WW1, was in new service battalions added to the regular and territorial battalions in each regiment.

Hence, the regulars were pre-existing battalions of professional soldiers while the service battalions were wartime entrants serving for the duration. As the war progressed, there was significant transfer of men between the two. Phil B

The "Service" Battalions were the New Army Battalions of the County Line Regiments formed as a Result of Lord Kitchener's Recruiting drive from 1914,in effect Many of the "Pals" Battalions were "Service" Battalions recruited from a particular area or City/Factory/Town/Etc;what today would be a "Demographic";They were all eager Volunteers!

The Long Long Trail @ the head of this site should fill you in any further Queries on the Various types of Battalions ;)

Hi M13,

Nah, I'm not dubious... :)...but should I trust someone from "M13"??? ;)

I had this idea that "Service Battalion" meant that they were a specialized group like the Green Berets, or Engineers, etc., for some reason. Duh.

Thanks,

Wade
