Remembered Today:

Mule traction on light railway

Dear All,

I am attaching two IWM photos showing mule traction on a Decauville railway in January 1917.

Any idea  which line, I think the Kopriva to Gudeli line given the flatness of the country.

The upper photo is IWM Q32724 and the lower IWM Q32725

I would agree given the only visual clue is the flat landscape Kopriva Gudeli is a good candidate. There are some tents visible just to the left of the first mule and between the second and third in the second picture.

Simon,

If you go to the IWM site and search for the numbers quoted by Julian, they will have a description, however I believe that the light railways were constructed by the RE but operated by the ASC, so the drivers pictured are most likely ASC. I am not an RE expert but I would think an RE driver would be transporting RE equipment and materials, if you post his name and service number on the Soldiers sub forum an RE expert may be able to tell you which unit he served with, then you can get and idea what he did from their war diary. Unfortunately the Salonika campaign war diaries have not been digitised so a trip the NA at Kew will be necessary to view them.
